Local and Non-Local Relaxation Dynamics of Hot Carriers

This project exploits time- and angle resolved photoelectron emission spectroscopy in layered heterostructures, two-dimensional materials, and adsorbate systems in order to determine relaxation times of electrons excited by electromagnetic fields in the ultraviolett, visible, and infrared spectral range as external stimuli. While it is well established that excited electrons relax in weakly correlated materials in momentum space in the electronic band structure E(k) by coupling to other electrons and phonons via electron-electron and electron-phonon scattering, relaxation proceeds in general also in real space. Within this project we have already extended optical pump-probe experiments which analyse non-local electron dynamics excited by backside pumping to non-linear femtosecond time-resolved spectroscopy. This approach will be extended in the future from metallic heterostructures to further compounds and in addition from one- to two-dimensional transport effects.
