About this course

The Interactive Data Exploration and Analytics (IDEA) lab course offered at the UDE Social Computing Group focuses on the effective integration of techniques from human-computer interaction (HCI), information visualization, and machine learning to help users interactively explore and visualize data.

The title of this semester’s IDEA lab is “Transparent User Models for Self-Actualization in a Scientific Recommender System”. Transparent user models make the internal representation of the user explicit to the user. Self-actualization is a concept from psychology and means in the context of recommender systems to support users in developing, exploring, and understanding their own unique tastes and preferences.

In our transparent Recommendation and Interest Model Application (RIMA) we recommend papers to researchers based on their interests. To achieve self-actualization, we introduced a dashboard with five pages and visualizations. These have already been evaluated in a qualitative study. In this lab, we will focus on three of the five pages and improve them based on the evaluation results and the literature. You will work in groups of 4/5 students. Each group will work on one of the three target visualizations with the goal to find and implement potential improvements.
