Lecture (2SWS) - winter term

Molecular Oncology

This lecture is directed towards Bachelor students from the field of Molecular Biology. It provides an overview on molecular oncology. The fundamentals of research methods in oncology and the causes and molecular mechanisms of cancerogenesis are illustrated. The lecture also provides detailed insights into oncologically relevant cellular processes, e.g., DNA repair, transcription, signal transduction and the mechanism of malign progression.

Lecture (2SWS) - summer term

Methods in Cancer Research

This lecture is directed towards Master students from the fields of Biology and Medical Biology and gives a comprehensive overview on experimental methods used in cancer research. It is jointly organized together with the Department of Molecular Cell Biology (Prof. Perihan Nalbant) and includes topics like the scientific method, tumor cell isolation, state-of-the-art microscopy, targeted manipulation of protein function, next-generation sequencing, DNA barcoding, genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics as well as mouse models and other clinically relevant research fields. Therefore, also different lecturers from the University Hospital Essen are participating in this oncology study course.

The lecture is accompanied by a number of seminars (also 2 SWS) on current literature.

(Introduction to) Molecular Biology

This lecture is directed towards Bachelor students from the fields of Biology, Molecular Biology and those receiving a teaching degree in Biology. It is organized by the Department of Molecular Biology I (Prof. Hemmo Meyer) and jointly conducted together with the Department of Molecular Cell Biology (Prof. Perihan Nalbant). The complete lecture series provides a comprehensive overview on molecular biology. Our lectures focus on the topics 'Nucleus' and 'Cancer'.

Molecular Cell Biology

This lecture is directed towards Master students from the fields of Biology and Medical Biology and gives detailed insights into different topics of molecular cell biology. It is organized by the Department of Molecular Biology I (Prof. Hemmo Meyer) and jointly conducted together with the Department of Molecular Cell Biology (Prof. Perihan Nalbant). Our lecture focuses on the topic 'Nucleus/nucleocytoplasmic transport'. The lecture is accompanied by a number of seminars (each 2 SWS) on current literature and research methods. It is also linked to a corresponding a practical course for Medical Biology students (see below).

Practical Course (2SWS) - summer term

Chemistry for Biologists

This practical course is directed towards Bachelor students receiving a teaching degree in Biology and focuses on the basics of chemistry. It is organized by the Department of Chemical Biology (Prof. Markus Kaiser) and supervised by different ZMB groups. Our courses focus on the topics 'Redox Reactions' and the 'Introduction to Organic Chemistry'.

Practical Course (1SWS) - winter term

General Methods in Microbiology and Molecular Biology

This practical course is directed towards Master students receiving a teaching degree in Biology and focuses on basic experiments for the future daily routine in school. It is organized and supervised by our department in analogy to a comparable course offered by the department of Microbiology (Dr. Michael Meltzer). As indicated, the course focuses on general methods in microbiology and molecular biology and is termed Vom Schülerexperiment ins wissenschaftliche Labor.

Molecular Cell Biology

This practical course is directed towards Master students from the field of Medical Biology and gives detailed insights into different topics of molecular cell biology. It is organized by the Department of Molecular Biology I (Prof. Hemmo Meyer) and jointly conducted together with the Department of Molecular Cell Biology (Prof. Perihan Nalbant). Thematically, the course is centered around the topic mitosis. Here, students are introduced to RNA interference, immunoblotting and fluorescence microscopy.

The practical course is directly linked to the corresponding lecture 'Molecular Cell Biology' (see above).

Common Methods in Biology/Molecular Biology

This practical course is directed towards Bachelor students from the fields of Biology and Molecular Biology. It is jointly organized by different ZMB groups and departments of the Biological Faculty. Our study course, like most others, includes an accompanying lecture and gives a short insight into the blotting technologies in general. In our practical course, students are introduced to immunoblotting and thus protein transfer, blocking and immunodetection.

Practical Course (6SWS) - winter term

Cell and Molecular Biology

This practical training course is directed towards Bachelor students from the fields of Biology, Medical and Molecular Biology. It is jointly organized together with the Department of Molecular Biology I (Prof. Hemmo Meyer) and the Department of Molecular Cell Biology (Prof. Perihan Nalbant). We offer this course twice during both semester breaks. Whereas the first course week is dealing with recombinant proteins, in our part the students are introduced into eukaryotic cell culture technology, cell transfection and fluorescence microscopy.
