Aus gegebenem Anlass sei noch einmal darauf hingewiesen, dass - wie in unserem Schreiben vom 23.03.2020* spezifiziert - trotz heutigem Vorlesungsbeginn im Distanzformat die Abgabefristen für Abschlussarbeiten und Hausarbeiten an der Fakultät für Geisteswissenschaften auch weiterhin gehemmt sind, bis der Regelbetrieb (zumindest in Teilen) wieder aufgenommen wurde, d.h. z.B. die Bibliotheken wieder geöffnet sind. Wir werden Sie informieren, sobald die Fristen wieder laufen. Erasmus+ Mobility at Pamukkale University, Turkey

From 30/03/2020 to 03/04/2020 Samuel Sanders was invited to Pamukkale University (PAU) in the Denizli Province of Turkey as part of the Erasmus+ Higher Education Mobility Agreement. Due to COVID-19, this exchange had to be postponed.

​From 27/01/2020 to 03/02/2020 Samuel Sanders taught a MA-seminar at Munster University (Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster). In this course, students were asked to adopt a thoughtful position to global education by learning about modern strategies that can move their future pupils to think critically about global problems and promote positive values in the EFL classroom. The strategies covered how to discuss bias, controversial issues, stereotypes, and diversity, among other topics.

On February 7, 2020, Dr. Julian Sudhoff was invited to hold a guest lecture and workshop at the LPM Saarbrücken (Landesinstitut für Pädagogik und Medien, Saarland). Aiming at CLIL practitioners, his talk revolved around the role and usage of the school language in German CLIL-classrooms.

Seminar, Münster - New Approaches to Teaching Literature and Culture in the EFL Classroom

From 3rd – 5th of February, 2020, Dr. Luisa Alfes gave a seminar at the University of Münster (Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität). In her seminar, she dealt with modern approaches to teach literature and culture in the EFL classroom. The idea was to, as far as possible, embrace the cultural diversity of the Anglophone world with concepts of modern language teaching and accordingly combine theoretical backgrounds of EFL education with practical teaching suggestions.

On January 15, 2020, Prof. Dr. Bernd Rüschoff was invited to hold a guest lecture at the University of Münster (Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität). His talk was part of a lecture series on Selected Aspects of SLA/ELT and focused on the “new” CEFR and its implications for language learning and teaching.

Teachers, as well as students, participated in her workshop which dealt with key questions such as how to handle disruptive behaviour, how to give instructions and how to respond to students’ needs and keep up their motivation?

On November 25, 2019, Prof. Dr. Eva Wilden in collaboration with Dr. Luisa Alfes, Joel Guttke, and Natalie Hofstra contributed a poster presentation at the Netzwerktag Digitalisierung at the University of Duisburg-Essen. They introduced an innovative means of holding a lecture. Their solution includes a flipped classroom design in which students actively take part in lectures through the use of digital tools such as Kahoot. In addition, the corresponding Moodle course allows students to engage in self-directed learning by including educational videos, digital quizzes, and many other possibilities for students to learn at their own pace.

On November 25, 2019, Dr. Katja Heim contributed a poster presentation at the Netzwerktag Digitalisierung at the University of Duisburg-Essen. She introduced an innovative project in which students had the opportunity to develop and implement digital media in the EFL classroom. This project served as a possible solution on how to prepare students for the digital workplace they will face in their future careers. 

 

 

Guest Lecture, Münster - Selected Aspects of SLA/ELT - CLIL

On November 13, 2019, Dr. Julian Sudhoff was invited to hold a guest lecture at the University of Münster (Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität). His talk was part of a lecture series on Selected Aspects of SLA/ELT and focused on introducing the CLIL teaching approach. As such, major methodological principles of CLIL were outlined and discussed. On this basis, Dr. Sudhoff closed his talk by drawing attention to the opportunities of intercultural learning in CLIL teaching.

 

Digitalisierung und das CEFR Companion Volume

​On November 8, 2019, Prof. Dr. Eva Wilden gave a talk about ‚Digitalisierung und das CEFR Companion Volume‘ at the University of Gießen. The talk was part of a conference on the new Companion Volume (2018) to the CEFR organized by the Educational Linguistics research group. Prof. Wilden had been invited to give a talk alongside other experts discussing various aspects of this new document of European language policy, such as mediation or German as a foreign/second language.

Englisch inklusiv has a new name: Krystina Mensing joined the EFL education team

We welcome Krystina Mensing, who is the team’s new driving force for inclusive EFL education. As a researcher on the project Englisch Inklusiv, she will develop teacher training courses focusing on inclusive EFL education. The project’s ultimate aim is to have a positive influence on students’ attitudes towards inclusive EFL teaching. Students in both the Master of Education and Bachelor will gain valuable insights into inclusive practice through the project’s network with various inclusive cooperation partners. Students will thus learn how to teach heterogeneous groups and implement inclusion in their various school contexts.

The English Language Classroom in the Digital Age – New Ways Forward

On Monday the 16th of September 2019, three groups of EFL-practitioners met to explore the latest trends and future scenarios for the use of digital media in the EFL classroom. The three groups were formed by representatives of the Cornelsen educational publishing house, teachers and teacher trainers from the region, and experts from the EFL-Education Section of the Department of Anglophone Studies at Duisburg Essen University. A large number of ideas and concepts concerning digital media in language learning were discussed and elaborated on. Further meetings and research activities are planned for the near future, with the view to support the development and use of innovative digital teaching materials and learning scenarios.
