Personal Data

Winfried Flüchter is Professor Emeritus at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) where he had a chair in Human Geography (1987–2008) and was Foundation Director of the Institute of East Asian Studies (IN-EAST). He is a member of the IN-EAST Research Training Group (PhD Program) “Risk and East Asia” funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). His Research is on Economic, Urban, Political and Social Geography with an emphasis on East Asia, particularly Japan.

Scientific Career

He has studied Latin Language and Literature, Geography and History at the Universities of Münster and Freiburg (1963–1969), furthermore Japanese Language at Ruhr University Bochum and International Christian University in Tokyo (1969–1971). He was Lecturer at Tsukuba State University, Japan (1975–1977) and Assistant and Research Fellow at the Institute of Geography at Ruhr University Bochum (1977–1985). He has degrees from the University of Freiburg (Staatsexamen 1969) and from Ruhr University Bochum, Faculty of Geoscience (PhD 1975 and Habilitation 1985). From 1986 to 2008 he was Professor at Gerhard Mercator University of Duisburg (since 2003: University of Duisburg-Essen).
