12 PhD positions (m/f/d) - E 13 TV-L, 65 %
2 MD/PhD positions (m/f/d) - E13 TV-L, 90 %

Starting on April 1st, 2020

The Research Training Group 1949 „Immune Response in Infectious Diseases – Regulation between Innate and Adaptive Immunity“ welcomes applications for 12 PhD positions and 2 MD/PhD positions (German "Promotion") for a three-year structured program.

The RTG 1949 focuses on the interaction between innate and adaptive immunity in infectious diseases and offers an outstanding education in the fields of infectious diseases and immunity to excellent young academics from natural sciences and medicine.

The following institutes are involved in the RTG:

  • Immunology (Essen)
  • Medical Microbiology (Düsseldorf & Essen)
  • Virology (Düsseldorf & Essen)
  • Molecular Medicine II (Düsseldorf)
  • Experimental Trauma Surgery (Essen)

The three-year structured program consists of seminars, retreats, symposia, lab rotations, method courses etc. (mandatory). In addition, participants will be offered the possibility to attend seminars on infectious diseases and soft skill workshops etc. Successful candidates will be awarded the PhD (Dr. rer. nat.) or MD/PhD degree. The program is taught in English.

Requirements:

  • excellent graduation in the fields of medical biology, biology, medicine, biochemistry, or biotechnology (Master or equivalent)
  • proven interest in one or more of the above indicated research fields
  • highly motivated and committed
  • interested in participating actively in the program of the RTG
  • disposed to work with laboratory animals (depending on the project)
  • excellent written and spoken English skills

The pay grade classification depends on the personal and collective legal requirements. The salary is in accordance with the German public service salary scale. The positions are third-party funded for the duration of 36 months.

MD fellowships

We are continuously recruiting for MD fellowships.

Medical students who are interested in the field of infection and/or immunology are offered the chance of being integrated into the research and qualification program at an early stage of their career. The fellowship comprises participation in the program for at least one year (6 months full time lab work plus lab work during semester breaks and lectures along with your studies), and participation in one annual retreat. The maximum duration of an individual MD fellowship will be 12 months. Please note that in order to participate in the program you need to take one semester off.

Requirements:

Medical students who would like to enter the MD program in preparation of their medical thesis should have completed their preclinical studies above average. Furthermore, you should be interested in experimental research.
