Georessourcen sind die Elemente des gesellschaftlichen Stoffwechsels mit der Natur: mineralische Rohstoffe, fossile Energieträger, Wasser, Luft, Böden und in einem weiteren Sinn auch die Biosphäre und das Klima. Mit der Inwertsetzung und Nutzung dieser Georessourcen sind zeitlich und räumlich stark variierende Mensch-Umwelt-Verhältnisse verbunden. Moderne Gesellschaften mit ihren vielschichtigen Verflechtungen sind so abhängig von ihnen wie nie zuvor. Georessourcen sind dabei immer auch Instrument zur (Re-)Produktion von Machtverhältnissen und zur Durchsetzung politisch-ökonomisch-ideologischer Interessen im Rahmen von Geopolitik.

Neben dem Klimawandel ist eine der großen und weiterhin unbeantworteten Zukunftsfragen die nach dem Umgang mit der Endlichkeit nicht erneuerbarer Georessourcen bei wachsendem Ressourcenverbrauch. Wie kann hier mehr Nachhaltigkeit im Sinne von Generationengerechtigkeit gelingen? Der vorliegende Band liefert eindrucksvolle Einblicke in die komplexen Wirkungsketten, die mit der Nutzung von Georessourcen verbunden sind – und die der Mensch in aller Regel nicht vollständig kontrollieren kann. Verschiedene konzeptionelle, analytische und kritische Zugänge liefern wichtige Denkanstöße für Energie- und Ressourcenwenden jenseits von Geoengineering und anderen technologischen Innovationen. Denn ohne die Überwindung gewohnheitsmäßiger Denk-, Lebens- und Verhaltensweisen, die sich an fossil-kapitalistischen Wohlstandsmodellen orientieren, dürfte eine konfliktfreie Versorgung der Menschheit in Zukunft kaum noch zu gewährleisten sein.

Das Buch richtet sich an die interdisziplinäre Fachwelt, an Praktiker, an Studierende und Lehrende aller Hochschultypen, die sich für die Schnittstellenthematik Mensch-Umwelt und die große Transformation zur Nachhaltigkeit interessieren.

Die Autoren:
Thomas Feldhoff war als Wissenschaftler an Universitäten in Deutschland, Großbritannien und Japan tätig und ist seit 2016 Professor für Humangeographie am Geographischen Institut der Ruhr-Universität Bochum mit Schwerpunkten in der geographischen Energie-, Ressourcen- und Ostasienforschung.
Helmut Schneider war wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Lehrstuhl für Kulturgeographie und Entwicklungsforschung am Geographischen Institut der Universität Düsseldorf sowie am Institut für Ostasienwissenschaften (IN-EAST), Fachgebiet Kulturgeographie und Regionale Geographie Ost- und Südostasiens an der Universität Duisburg-Essen.

Abstract
Even though research on the influence of institutions on entrepreneurial activities has recently gained scholarly attention, most studies are quantitative cross-country analyses that assume response homogeneity. Qualitative single-country studies that provide deeper insights into institutional peculiarities are still rare, especially in the East Asian context. Based on qualitative data generated from semi-structured interviews, this study examines the institutional environment for entrepreneurship in South Korea and its latest changes to explain the recent wave of newly established corporations. Building on Scott’s distinction of institutional dimensions, this article demonstrates how significant changes in regulative institutions pushed forward by the Korean central government have decreased individual financial risks and have created a surge in business foundations. At the same time, normative institutions have remained almost unchanged, while changes of the cognitive institutional dimension in the form of entrepreneurship education are underway. The findings suggest that regulative institutions play a bigger role for entrepreneurial activities than cognitive or normative institutions, as people start a business despite unfavorable informal institutions. Theory should therefore reevaluate the importance and effective power of each institutional dimension on entrepreneurial activities. Policymakers who put high emphasis on regulative institutions should pay attention to potential moral hazards arising from generous support programs.

Recently, the paper The Implications of the New Silk Road Railway on Local Development, co-authored by Yuan Li, Professor of Shandong University and Vice President of the Institute of International Studies (and former Acting Professor of IN-EAST), Ling Fang, Research Associate of IN-EAST, together with Hans-Jörg Schmerer, Professor of Hagen University, and Martin Kleimann, Research Associate of Hagen University (formerly IN-EAST), was accepted by the internationally recognized Journal of Asian Economics (bimonthly, SSCI) and published in the May 11 issue.
The paper presents and examines the positive impact of the China-European train on the regional economies of European nodal cities from its inception to 2018. The paper finds that the CR express contributed to employment growth in all nodal cities, with more significant growth in the service sector, based on EU third level administrative division (NUTS3) data, using multi-period difference-in-difference and integrated control methods. The employment growth in neighbouring regions also shows the same trend, reflecting a positive spatial spill-over effect. At the same time, the development of CR express does not have a crowding-out effect on road traffic, but rather promotes the growth of road transport, which proves that the economic effect of CR express is incremental competition rather than stock competition. This paper expands the knowledge of existing literature on CR express and fills the gap of its impact on regional economy.
Journal of Asian Economics was founded by the American Council for Asian Economic Studies (ACAES) in 1990 and has an impact factor of 1.797 (from 2020 Journal Citation Reports) and a CiteScore of 2.3 (average number of citations for papers published in four consecutive years, from 2016–2014). (data from 2016–2019). The journal’s RePEc Simple Impact Factors (Last 10 Years) for Journals is 4.549, and it is also the top academic journal in Asian economics research. The journal focuses on the unique characteristics of Asian economies in terms of institutional features, development paths, policy experiences, or international interactions, and aims to raise the level of research on Asian economies and facilitate contacts between Asian economists and their global counterparts.

This book situates the 2020 Tokyo Olympics within the social, economic, and political challenges for Japan. While the new Olympic competition is the race to reign in COVID-19 in time to hold Tokyo 2020 in the summer of 2021, in fact the build-up to Tokyo 2020 has been many years in the making, and this book documents how the preparations for the Olympics have already created tremendous changes in Japan. It explains the many stakeholders, institutions, average citizens, interest groups, and protest groups involved. This interplay between tensions and hopes is particularly elevated now, due to the current COVID-19 epidemic and the Games postponement.

This volume assembles 34 short chapters covering all relevant aspects of society, economics, culture, and politics including technology, food, security, work, media, sexuality, history, film, linguistics, volunteering, architecture, advertising, and – of course – sports!

The book is also great to use as a textbook for introductory Japanese studies classes!

Special journal issue on “East Asia and the EU – Partners in Global Economic Governance”, edited by Sebastian Bersick and Werner Pascha of AREA Ruhr
Professors Sebastian Bersick (Bochum) and Werner Pascha (Duisburg) have recently edited a special issue of the East Asian Community Review, a journal of Palgrave Macmillan with Professor Key-young Son of Korea University, Seoul, as editor-in-chief, on East Asia and the EU – Partners in Global Economic Governance. The publication is an outcome of the research efforts of the Alliance for Research on East Asia Ruhr (AREA Ruhr), a cooperative scheme between the Faculty of East Asian Studies of Ruhr University of Bochum and of the Institute of East Asian Studies (IN-EAST) of Duisburg-Essen University.

The special issue, published in June 2019 https://link.springer.com/journal/42215/2/1), focuses on the topic of global governance and the role that European and East Asian actors and institutions play within it. All contributions explore how and why actors and institutions in Europe and East Asia are engaging in multilateral cooperation and the role of the domestic, regional and global levels in shaping their respective policies, behaviour and relations amongst both regions and on the global stage.

Papers were firstly presented during a workshop at Ruhr University Bochum on the eve of the Hamburg G20 summit in 2017. The event was supported by the European Union’s Jean Monnet programme and by its Jean Monnet Chair on The International Political Economy of EU-Asia Relations, located at the Faculty of East Asian Studies, Department of International Political Economy of East Asia, RUB. It was organized in cooperation with the School of International Relations and Public Affairs (SIRPA), Fudan University in Shanghai, and formed part of the AREA Ruhr collaboration.

The special issue encompasses four papers. Questioning the efficiency of intensive globalization, Werner Pascha (IN-EAST Duisburg) introduces the idea of a “regional policy space” in his conceptual paper on The Globalization Trilemma and Regional Policy Space: Opportunities and Challenges for the EU and East Asia. Bernadette Andreosso O’Callaghan (RU Bochum) deals with The G20 Growth Challenge in the Framework of EU East-Asia Economic Relations, approaching the topic from a macro-economic level of analysis. Nele Noesselt’s (IN-EAST Duisburg) article on Sino-EU Cooperation 2.0: Toward a Global “Green Strategy?” discusses China’s strategy vis-à-vis Europe as well as the recent changes in the EU’s China policy. Wang Xiaorui’s (Huaqiao University in Quanzhou) article China’s Approach to Environmental Governance and the Role of the EU in Market-Induced Reforms deals with how China’s domestic environmental governance policies and mechanisms are co-shaped by market-induced forces. All papers ultimately aim at contributing to the literature and policy discourse on the role of East Asia and the EU with regard to the future of politics and global governance, the reform of global economic governance and regional contributions in defence of multilateralism.

Heidt, Vitali (2017): Two Worlds of Aging: Institutional Shifts, Social Risks, and the Livelihood of the Japanese Elderly. Baden-Baden: Nomos.

This book illustrates why and to what extent societal aging has triggered a change in social security systems – which has simultaneously led to the emergence of new social risks in Japan. The regional context thus forms a crucial factor in welfare creation. As the foundation for a coherent and comprehensive representation of this complex matter, a mixed methods approach, consisting of ethnograpic fieldwork and analysis of both sociopolitical measures and aggregate data, was utilised in this book. The results indicate that the institutional framework has positive effects on the social economy and local communities. But innovative strategies of local problem-solving for social capital activation are fostered as well. This book is intended for scholars in the fields of welfare, social and regional research. But it also provides new input for both the social economy and social policy.

Japan has experienced a vast process of demographic aging and is the forerunner in terms of its elderly population; in 2017, more than 27.5 % of the population are older than 65 and future projections are dramatic. The rapid aging of the population poses challenges not only for the economy, but also for social security systems and the welfare of the elderly and is origin of social risks. Through the introduction of long-term care insurance (LCTI) in 2000, the Japanese government tried to tackle several issues: fiscal deficits through misusage of medical facilities for geriatric care, encumbrance of families, and social stigmatization of the care-seeking elderly. Overwhelmed by the success of the LCTI project, reforms became necessary to contain expenditure. More than that, regional aspects, such as infrastructure and aging, grew more vital. In this regard, a community care concept was introduced and successively implemented on a local basis. It marks, however, a process of change in the welfare package for elderly care, demanding more activity from local governments and the civil engagement of local communities to succeed.
