A unique feature of UMESciA will be the development of synergistic Tandem Research Units (TRUs) between Clinician Scientists (UMEA) and Medical Scientists (UMESciA). The substantial thematic overlap between both programs will aid the formation of those tandems and the synergistic execution of the research programs. We will organize an UMEA/UMESciA joint symposium to enable establishment of collaborative tandem teams.

A dedicated training program and seminar series will familiarize UMESciA scholars with essential knowledge required for their work at the interface of clinical medicine and basic/translational research. This training program will include the following areas:

  • Operation and responsibilities of the Ethical review board
  • regulatory aspects of clinical trials
  • clinical trial design
  • disease registries, patient data management, and biostatistics
  • cancer center operation and clinical documentation
  • classical and molecular tumor boards
  • new developments in digital pathology
  • introduction to existing technical core facilities (IMCES, WBE)

In addition UMESciA scholars will accquire the following qualifications:

  • FELASA-B certificate (animal experimentation)
  • permission to carry out genetic engineering work (Projektleiterkurs Gentechnik),
  • permission to work with radionuclides (Strahlenschutzbeauftragte:r)
  • training modules on GCP and GLP

These training programs will be complemented by mentoring, leadership-training, and individually tailored gender equality and compatibility measures that allow our outstanding candidates to achieve professional goals along with personal commitments including family responsibilities.

UMESciA scholars will have the opportunity to participate in the existing MediMent-Peer program and an individual UMESciA mentoring program will provide additional and specially tailored mentoring by a tandem of an experienced clinical mentor and one experienced mentor with a natural sciences background.
