Location

The University of Duisburg-Essen is located in the middle of a region with the largest number of educational institutions per square kilometre in Europe. About 39,000 students are enrolled at the university; with its 3,400 academic and non-academic staff, it is one of the most important employers in the Ruhr region. The university is the youngest in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia and belongs to the ten largest universities in Germany.
The Ruhr area with its multitude of museums, cultural venues and sports facilities offers an incomparable cultural and living experience. It is not without reason that in 2010 the city of Essen and the Ruhr area became the “European Capital of Culture”. Thanks to the close crosslinking of cities every metropolis of the region can be reached within a short amount of time.

Institute of Political Science

The Institute of Political Science at the University Duisburg-Essen is one of the largest in Germany, working in close cooperation with the INEF (Institute for Development and Peace), the Institute of East Asian Studies, the Rhine-Ruhr Institute for Social Research and Policy Consulting and the NRW School of Governance.

  • Global Governance
  • Governance and Government in World Regions
  • Democratic Governance

English-lectured Courses:

Each semester, the Institutes of Political Science and Sociology at the University of Duisburg-Essen and the Faculty of Social Science at Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) publish a joint course list detailing the English course offer, thereby allowing students to take advantage of the University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr) mobility structures more easily and take classes at both universities.
