Education for Sustainable Development
The journey is the reward, Confuzius once said. And there is probably no other quotation related closer to sustainable development. Sustainable thinking and acting are indispensably linked to the goal of a sustainable development.
To enable children, youth and adults to make decisions for the future and estimate the consequences of their own actions for future generations, the members of the United Nations committed themselves to implementing the principles of a sustainable development into their education systems.
Universities for a sustainable development
In the course of the Education for Sustainable Development the universities hold a special position. They unite research, teaching and service business in one institution. The establishment of aspects of sustainability in all university structures offers a great development potential that has to be used. Through the initiation of the Sustainability Process the UDE, as first university in North Rhine-Westfalia, wants to take over a pioneering role and to explicitly promote the sustainable development of the University.
A glance at the future
Although several projects have been carried out, the Future Commission of the German National Committee still faces challenges concerning the development of a perceptible sustainability profile in all education fields, institutions and authorities involved. The implementation of the Global Action Programme ESD represents the first step towards continuing the engagement of all actors for the education concept and converting the ESD from a project to a structure.
