The Human Scale

How will cities develop concerning its rising populations? How will public space change? How does this influence every day life of the inhabitants? In the course of the core study area Urban Systems of the UDE the AstA presents The Human Scale, a documentary on big cities, humans, and their relation.

Jan Gehl, architect and urban planner from Denmark, systematically analysed the human behaviour in cities during more than 40 years of working life. In the center of all urban planning stands the human that requires the city as living space and places demands on it. On the basis of several positive as well as negative examples like New York, Dhaka and Christchurch, Gehl concerns himself with the question of how to improve quality of life in spite of different human and economic needs.
