A look back at the 1st Sustainability Days of Action

Experience, discuss and touch sustainability. There is no better way to describe the 1st Sustainability Days of Action that took place June 15 to June 18 2015 at the UDE. Nowadays, sustainability is a controversially discussed topic that includes several fields. No wonder that at the UDE many actors took part in the 1st Days of Action to inform about sustainable food, mobility, urban planning or initiatives.

Inauguration

How important those topics are for the UDE, Dr. Ambrosy, vice-chancellor of the University, and Prof. Dr. André Niemann talked about during the inaugural event. Together with Mrs. Antonia Kühn (DGB) and Mr. Schulte-Terhusen (student´s office) they illustrated how important a constructive discourse on a sustainable development is – whether in education or society – and which efforts it takes to establish a sustainable thinking at the UDE.

Sustainable UDE

The 2nd day was dedicated to fitness and party. How that goes together, the Health Day for employees of the UDE – organised by the Department for Staff and Organisational Development – and the „No-electricity-party“ supported by the Initiative for Sustainability (Initiative für Nachhaltigkeit, IfN) tried to illustrate. In addition to presentations and fitness programmes, in the evening vegan barbecue and music by Nice Bag of Tasty were on the agenda.

City & Mobility

They aim at promoting the energy transition on the streets but electric cars still do not catch on in Germany. Electromobility will, nevertheless, in the near future replace vehicles with conventional motorization, Prof. Dr. Heike Proff (UDE) is convinced. For the 7th time the Scientific Forum Mobility took place under her supervision at Fraunhofer Haus in Duisburg. Around 200 participants from economy, research and politics – among others executives from Ford and Deutsche Bahn – discussed challenges, opportunities and new developments of autonomous driving, carsharing and traffic strategies for big cities.

In how far big cities hold a critical component was shown in the movie The Human Scale. Under the guiding principle: we form the city and the city forms us, and how strong the bond between humans and cities actually is, and what has to be done to make this bond sustainable.

We herewith thank all engaged and active participants and hope to welcome you again next year to the 2nd edition of the Sustainability Days of Action!
