Excursion to the Möhne Reservoir at Ruhrverband 2025
Students and staff of our institute had the unique opportunity to experience the Möhne Reservoir up close during an exciting excursion. An absolute highlight: gaining access to normally restricted areas of the structure! We were able to walk through the impressive inspection galleries, explore the bottom outlets, and take a look at the turbine system. These hands-on experiences and the direct exchange with on-site professionals are of immense value to the education of our students – they demonstrate how complex and at the same time fascinating hydraulic engineering structures can be. Excursion to the Reservoir Control Center at Ruhrverband 2024
Following the RTC-Tools training led by Dr. Bernhard Becker (Deltares), a small group of students had the opportunity to visit the Reservoir Control Center of Ruhrverband this year. Ruhrverband is responsible for managing the reservoirs in the Ruhr river basin and therefore operates a central control facility in Essen.The group gained insight into key control parameters such as low-flow augmentation to maintain water supply during periods of low natural discharge, as well as flood protection through the management of designated flood control storage volumes during the winter months.
Excursion to the Große Dhünn Reservoir 2024
Bachelor’s and Master’s students once again visited the Große Dhünn Reservoir – this time in perfect weather. Built between 1975 and 1985, it supplies five waterworks in the Bergisch water supply network and also serves as a flood protection facility. The excursion was led by the enthusiastic staff members Mara Offermann and Thorsten Luckner. As in the previous year, particular attention was paid to the Thermorüssel – a thermal intake pipe that has ensured a balanced temperature profile downstream of the Dhünn since 2015.
