May 2025 Participation in ICOLD 2025 in Chengdu – Supported by a Travel Grant from DTK
Our research associate Johanna Schimanski had the special opportunity to attend the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) in Chengdu, China, in May 2025.
ICOLD is the world’s largest specialist conference in the fields of dam construction, hydropower, and water resources management. Her participation was made possible by a travel grant from the Deutschen Talsperrenkomitees(DTK), which specifically supports young professionals. Johanna Schimanski was selected as one of only a few scholarship recipients. During the conference, she presented a scientific poster and took part in numerous technical presentations, discussion forums, and excursions.
April 2025
At the EGU General Assembly 2025, our researchers Johanna Schimanski and Gregor Johnen presented their current work in the form of posters.
Johanna Schimanski showcased an ensemble optimization method for managing the Ruhr reservoirs during dry periods, while Gregor Johnen presented an LSTM model for inflow forecasting based on the CAMELS-DE dataset. As always, it was an incredibly valuable week, with meaningful exchanges and discussions with fellow scientists.

January 2025 Project Launch: interSim – Digital Learning through Interactive Simulation
interSim uses computer simulations to provide hands-on training in the water and wastewater sector.
A key goal of the project is the development of a new advanced training program for the professional qualification "Aquamatiker/in" (DQR level 5), aiming to close the qualification gap between vocational training and master craftsman level.
The project is funded as part of the InnoVET PLUS program by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
