Climate Action Plan Duisburg

Project description

In close cooperation with the city of Duisburg, the University of Duisburg-Essen is currently developing a Climate Action Plan for the Duisburg (KSKDU) in the framework of the German National Climate Aciton Plan. This action plan forms a strategic basis for decision making and planning aid for future mitigation efforts in Duisburg.

By identifying technical and economic CO2 reduction potentials and appropriate measures, climate-damaging emissions will be reduced in the short (eg one to three years), medium (three to seven years) and long term (more than seven years). The action plan is oriented towards the national climate protection goals and thus acknowledges the need  to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80 to 95 percent by 2050.

Measures will be developed for seven fields of action:

  • Industry;
  • Traffic and logistics;
  • Climate-optimized urban development;
  • Energy saving, increase of energy efficiency, buildings, energy and heat supply;
  • Public procurement;
  • as well as two other fields which will be determined in the process.

The concrete plans and targets within these fields of action will be developed in a holistic manner in cooperation with actors and stakeholders, i.e. companies, institutions, citizens, inhabitants. From September 2015 the public participation will take place both in individual meetings as well as in working groups and will identify the measures to be taken for the next ten to 15 years.
