Joel Guttke is a lecturer (Akademischer Rat) in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Education at the University of Duisburg-Essen. He holds a PhD in EFL Education.

Joel’s research focuses on understanding the factors that constitute effective, high-quality EFL education. His work examines elements of instructional quality (Unterrichtsqualität) and the professional competence of EFL teachers. Consequently, his research is situated at the intersection of research into foreign language education (Fremdsprachenforschung) and educational research (Empirische Bildungsforschung).

Joel completed his studies in English and Mathematics at the University of Duisburg-Essen (2015–2021). During this time, he was awarded a scholarship from the Pädagogischer Austauschdienst and spent six months abroad working as a foreign language assistant at Coláiste de hÍde in Dublin, Ireland. After obtaining his teaching qualification for secondary education, he remained at the University of Duisburg-Essen to pursue his PhD (2021–2025). His dissertation involved the development and validation of a subject-specific scale to assess students’ and teachers’ ratings of cognitive activation (kognitive Aktivierung) in primary EFL education.
