Das Fachgebiet Eukaryotische Mikrobiologie befindet sich im Aufbau an der Fakultät für Biologie und gehört zum Forschungsschwerpunkt Wasser- und Umweltforschung. Es besteht eine enge Kooperation mit dem Zentrum für Wasser- und Umweltforschung und der gerade eröffneten Water Graduate School. Das Fachgebiet ist fokussiert auf die Ökologie, Diversität, Systematik und Evolution von parasitischen, eukaryotischen Mikroorganismen (Protisten), wie z.B. den Apicomplexa.

The department of Eukaryotic Microbiology is currently being established at the Faculty of Biology and part of the university’s main area of water research. There is close cooperation with the Centre for Water and Environmental Research and the recently opened Water Graduate School. The department focuses on the ecology, diversity, systematics, and evolution of parasitic, eukaryotic microorganisms (protists), such as the Apicomplexa.

Your main tasks

Sie nehmen Forschungsaufgaben im Bereich Protozoologie in aquatischen Systemen wahr. Hier soll insbesondere die Diversität (morphologisch/molekularbiologisch) von parasitischen Protisten (z.B. Gregarinen, die zu den Apicomplexa gehören) und deren Effekte auf ihre aquatischen Wirte untersucht werden. Sie sollen sowohl die Wirte (Invertebraten) direkt, als auch Umweltproben (Metabarcoding) auf das Vorhandensein protistischer Parasiten untersuchen. Sie werden Wirt-Parasit-Systeme identifizieren, die im Labor gehältert werden, und als Modellsysteme etabliert werden können um den Einfluss von Gregarinen auf Ihre Wirte, und wie dieser sich unter äußeren Einflüssen verändert, zu verstehen.

You will carry out research tasks in the field of protistology in aquatic systems, with particular focus on the diversity (morphological/molecular biological) of parasitic protists (e.g. gregarines, which belong to the Apicomplexa) and effects on their hosts. You will examine both, the host organisms (invertebrates) and environmental samples (metabarcoding) for the presence of parasitic protists. You will identify host-parasite systems that can be maintained in the laboratory and can be established as model systems to understand the impact of gregarines on their hosts and how the relationship changes under external influences.

You will also be involved in teaching and administrative tasks.

Within the scope of the activity, opportunities for further scientific qualifications are offered.

Darüber hinaus sind Sie an der Umsetzung und Durchführung von Lehrveranstaltungen und Verwaltungsaufgaben beteiligt.

Your profile

• Sie haben ein überdurchschnittlich abgeschlossenes Hochschulstudium im Fach Biologie oder Äquivalent von mind. 8 Semestern Regelstudienzeit (z.B. BSc plus MSc)
• Sie interessieren sich und haben wissenschaftliche Vorerfahrung in der Ökologie und Systematik mit Schwerpunkt auf Protisten
• Die Familiarität mit molekularbiologischen und mikroskopischen Methoden ist notwendig.
• Wünschenswert sind eine Affinität zu Feldarbeit, sowie Datenauswertung / Bioinformatik, inkl. Omics-Daten
• Kenntnisse in statistischen Methoden, Teamfähigkeit, sowie fundierte Kommunikationsfähigkeit in Englisch werden von Ihnen erwartet
• Von Vorteil ist es, wenn Sie Erfahrung mit der Handhabung von parasitischen Protisten (z.B. Apikomplexa) mitbringen.

• You have completed a university degree in biology or equivalent of at least 8 semesters of standard study time (e.g., BSc plus MSc) above-average
• You are interested and have previous experience in ecology and systematics with a focus on protists
• Familiarity with molecular biological and microscopic methods is necessary.
• Desirables are an affinity for field work, as well as data analysis / bioinformatics, including omics data
• You are expected to have knowledge of statistical methods, the ability to work in a team, and well-founded communication skills in English
• It is an advantage if you have experience in handling parasitic protists (e.g. Apicomplexa).
