Linguistics Lounge: Humerous conversational routines in scripted and fictional telecinematic dialogues
Monika Kirner Ludwig, University of Innsbruck

This study is innovatively positioned at the intersections of Pragmatics
(concretely, Pragmatics of Fiction), Phraseology, Conversational Humor
Studies, and Telecinematic Stylistics and focuses on a research niche that –
despite its collective saliency in everyday oral discourse – has hardly received
any scholarly attention so far: ‘formulaic humor’ and ‘humorous formula’.
Embedded in a corpus-linguistic design, my study applies a conversation-
analytical lens in order to identify turn-specific patterns in scripted and
fictional dialogue dataset (ca. 20 mio words, 34 TV series) .

New Study Programme, MA Anglophone Popular Culture

Both the increasingly globalized job market and the continuous advancement of academia require graduates from research-focused master programmes with competencies in more than one culture and language. By guiding students towards independent, competitive research projects and by teaching exclusively in English, students’ intercultural competencies (esp. in terms of Anglophone Popular Culture) as well as their problem-solving skills are advanced and strengthened. Since organised thinking and theoretically informed approaches to complex problems  are necessary for both areas, the MA programme prepares students for a career in the academia as well as the job market beyond the university.
