doyouunderstandwhatimsaying : How learners break into speech stream segmentation

One of the first tasks of language acquisition is to identify words in the incoming speech stream (word segmentation). This presents a challenge to the learner, as speech does not contain any ostensive pauses between words which would signal a word boundary (Cole & Jakimik, 2005). Yet, infants solve this problem during the first year of life (Jusczyk & Aslin, 1995) and early mastery of word segmentation correlates with faster language development, for example vocabulary growth (e.g. Von Holzen, Nishibayashi, & Nazzi, 2018). Infants learn language specific segmentation strategies (Cutler, 2001), which are difficult to overcome when processing speech in a new language (e.g. phonotactic cues; Weber & Cutler, 2006). Studies with adult ab initio leaners show initial difficulty in speech segmentation (Snijders, Kooijman, Cutler, & Hagoort, 2007), unless that speech contains cues that match prior-language knowledge, such as lexical transparency [cont on flyer]

New Study Programme, MA Anglophone Popular Culture

Both the increasingly globalized job market and the continuous advancement of academia require graduates from research-focused master programmes with competencies in more than one culture and language. By guiding students towards independent, competitive research projects and by teaching exclusively in English, students’ intercultural competencies (esp. in terms of Anglophone Popular Culture) as well as their problem-solving skills are advanced and strengthened. Since organised thinking and theoretically informed approaches to complex problems  are necessary for both areas, the MA programme prepares students for a career in the academia as well as the job market beyond the university. The Department of Anglophone Studies now has its own Instagram account. There we‘ll be providing information about selected events and all the latest happening in the department.
