‘I’m Not a Monster, I’m Just Ahead of the Curve’ Postmodernism, Power, and the Villains of Christopher Nolan’s Batman Trilogy.
Irene Zarza Rubio, University of York
We’re aware it’s an early bird event, but if you are in and feel like it, consider yourself cordially invited!
The lecture explores the cultural and ideological dimensions of the Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy through the lens of postmodern theory, focusing on its enduring resonance within late capitalist society. By analysing the key villains found in Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy, we investigate how the spectacle of Gotham’s crime and heroism serves to obscure and perpetuate deeper social contradictions. The lecture also considers how Batman as a figure navigates the tension between vigilante justice and systemic reform, embodying the paradoxes of postmodern identity and ideology. Ultimately, this analysis reveals how the Batman mythos endures as a cultural touchstone, critiquing yet reinforcing contemporary power dynamics.

New Study Programme, MA Anglophone Popular Culture
Both the increasingly globalized job market and the continuous advancement of academia require graduates from research-focused master programmes with competencies in more than one culture and language. By guiding students towards independent, competitive research projects and by teaching exclusively in English, students’ intercultural competencies (esp. in terms of Anglophone Popular Culture) as well as their problem-solving skills are advanced and strengthened. Since organised thinking and theoretically informed approaches to complex problems are necessary for both areas, the MA programme prepares students for a career in the academia as well as the job market beyond the university.
