Agentic Business Process Management: New Research Roadmap on Human–AI Agent Collaboration Published
The published paper, titled “Agentic Business Process Management: A Research Manifesto,” outlines a new perspective on the future of process management in the era of agentic artificial intelligence (Agentic AI).
At the core of the paper is the argument that traditional approaches to Business Process Management (BPM) will no longer be sufficient in the future. While the primary focus has historically been on automating individual tasks, attention is now shifting toward the management and coordination of autonomous, AI-based agent systems.
The concept of Agentic Business Process Management describes organizations in which humans and AI agents jointly design and execute business processes. The goal is to ensure that AI agents:
- Act proactively,
- Coordinate effectively with one another,
- Operate flexibly while remaining compliant with rules and regulations,
- Make transparent and explainable decisions,
- Remain capable of dialogue and interaction, and
- Safely adapt and modify themselves when necessary.
The research highlights that the future of process management extends far beyond traditional automation. Instead, new organizational forms are emerging in which humans and AI agents collaboratively determine how work is organized, coordinated, and carried out.
The published roadmap identifies key research questions and challenges for the coming years, providing valuable guidance for both academia and industry in the field of AI-driven organizational management.
