MULTI 2026: International Workshop Accepted at MoDELS
The 13th International Workshop on Multi-Level Modelling (MULTI 2026) has been accepted as an official workshop of the ACM/IEEE 29th International Conference on Model Driven Engineering Languages and Systems (MoDELS 2026). The event is co-organized by Pierre Maier, a research associate at the Chair of Business Informatics and Integrated Information Systems within our faculty.
Inaugural Ceremony of the Software Engineering Department of Our Faculty
The Software Engineering Department of our faculty cordially invites you to the inaugural lectures of Prof. Dr. Vogelsang, Prof. Dr. Dmitrienko, and Prof. Dr. Sobania on June 23, 2026, at 2:00 PM.
The event will provide insights into the department’s current research focus areas and future developments. Following the lectures, a summer gathering will take place starting at 4:00 PM, offering an opportunity for informal exchange and networking.
Invitation to the Distinguished Lecture by Fabiano Dalpiaz (Utrecht University)
On June 9, 2026, our faculty will welcome Fabiano Dalpiaz from Utrecht University for a Distinguished Lecture. In his presentation, he will provide insights into current research on requirements artifacts and their role in the collaboration between AI systems and software development teams.
The event is aimed at researchers, students, and anyone interested in the future perspectives of modern software engineering.
Agentic Business Process Management: New Research Roadmap on Human–AI Agent Collaboration Published
What happens when organizations are no longer managed exclusively through traditional workflows, but instead by humans and AI agents jointly making decisions and shaping processes? This question was explored by researchers from several universities during a Dagstuhl seminar, including Andreas Metzger from the Chair of Software Systems Engineering at our Faculty of Computer Science. The resulting research roadmap has now been published in the renowned Information Systems Journal.
The TOSEM article examines the impact of Generative AI (GenAI) on the future of software engineering
How will Generative AI (GenAI) fundamentally transform software engineering—not only the way we write code, but also the way entire software systems operate?
This key question was investigated by Andreas Metzger from our Faculty of Software Systems Engineering together with researchers from Germany and Italy. The results have now been published in the renowned journal ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology (TOSEM).
AI for Good Hackathon brings students, developers, and founders to Essen
At the “AI for Good Hackathon,” students from the University of Duisburg-Essen, Ruhr University Bochum, and TU Dortmund University are jointly developing AI solutions for real-world societal challenges.
From June 19 to 21, 2026, creative minds, tech talent, and entrepreneurs will gather at the Colosseum Theater in Essen to work alongside mentors from research and industry. The goal is to transform innovative ideas in areas such as sustainability, inclusion, and the common good into concrete prototypes.
Workshop Embedded Machine Learning 2026
The workshop “Embedded Machine Learning” once again brought together researchers and practitioners from academia and industry. Organized by the Chair of Intelligent Embedded Systems (IES) at the University of Duisburg-Essen in cooperation with national and international partners, the event focused on current developments in AI on embedded hardware.
The Dean’s Award of Business Informatics recognizes innovative student projects
As part of the Dean’s Award in the Business Informatics program at the Faculty of Computer Science, outstanding student project work from the winter semester 2025/2026 was once again honored on May 6. Innovative and socially relevant projects were awarded for their excellence.
The Human-Centered Computing and Psychology Campus Tour in Duisburg is taking place again
The Campus Tour at the Duisburg campus is aimed at prospective students interested in the Human-Centered Computing and Psychology (MIPSY) degree program, as well as secondary schools that would like to introduce their students to the campus through an educational excursion. The tour will take place on June 16, 2026, starting at 10:00 a.m.
Studies
The Faculty of Computer Science will offer an attractive and diverse range of courses that is unique in the region. It will include, among others, the bachelor's/master's degree programs "Computer Science", "Applied Cognitive and Media Science", "Software Engineering" and "Business Informatics" as well as the teaching degree in Computer Science. All enrolled students can continue their studies as usual.
Information for applicants
Research
In addition to the essential foundations of informatics, we explore emerging systems in their interactions with their environment. This involves interaction with people and other technical systems, as well as embedding these systems in economic and societal contexts. In order to shape the future of digital transformation, we bundle our competencies in three main research areas.
Human-Centered Digital Technology
Focus is on exploring the reciprocal adaptivity of human-technology systems and the empowerment of human users in interaction with increasingly intelligent technologies.
Software Technology
We shape the future of engineering and operation of novel software systems and seek intelligent solutions at the interfaces of complexity, security, and usability. These activities are bundled at paluno - The Ruhr Insitute for Software Technology.
Digitalisation in Service and Trade
We address the challenges of how disruptive technological approaches generate successful innovations in service organizations. Beyond that, we examine the effects that new technologies have on organizations, both internally and externally.
