AI as a Tool of the Future: Why Computer Science Remains More Important Than Ever

Artificial intelligence is transforming the way software is developed, businesses are managed, and digital innovations are created. In a recent feature by WDR Lokalzeit Essen, Hannes Rothe from the Faculty of Computer Science at University of Duisburg-Essen explained the implications of this development for computer science and information systems.

Rothe emphasized that AI will have a lasting impact on the workplace, but it will not replace the fundamental competencies of computer scientists. Instead, the required skill set is evolving. In addition to technical expertise, the ability to analyze problems, design complex systems, and use AI tools critically and responsibly will become increasingly important.

For prospective students, Rothe sees no reason for concern. The degree programs offered by the Faculty of Computer Science continue to attract strong interest, with around 1,000 students enrolling each year. Demand for qualified professionals remains high, even as job profiles and areas of work evolve alongside technological advancements.

At the same time, the faculty is actively developing the technologies of tomorrow. Research areas such as neuro-symbolic artificial intelligence, edge computing, and other innovative approaches contribute to shaping the ongoing digital transformation.

For the faculty, one conclusion is clear: artificial intelligence is a powerful tool—not a substitute for solid computer science expertise. As a result, AI-related content is being increasingly integrated into degree programs to prepare students for the challenges of a rapidly changing world of work.

We would like to thank Hannes Rothe for his valuable insights and are pleased that the Faculty of Computer Science at the University of Duisburg-Essen was able to contribute its expertise to the public discussion on artificial intelligence.
