AI in HR: Process Integration and Data-Driven Decision-Making at Siemens Energy

Prof. Dr. Ralf Plattfaut and Ali Ergün (Research Associate) conducted an expert interview with Marc Muntermann and Dr. Caroline Baethge from Siemens Energy on the use of AI-powered HR platforms. The discussion focused on the company-wide platform “COIN” (Compensation Insights), which integrates and standardizes core HR processes while enhancing them with AI-based functionalities.

The interview highlights that the successful use of Artificial Intelligence in HR requires a consistent data foundation and harmonized processes. Only after standardizing workflows that had previously been largely manual was it possible to implement scalable AI applications. This underscores the importance of data quality and process integration as key areas of focus within Information Systems and Business Informatics.

With the “People Planner,” an integrated end-to-end solution for workforce and position planning was developed, featuring AI-supported job description generation and chatbot-based interaction. The consolidation of previously isolated systems resulted in measurable efficiency gains: more than 10,000 positions were processed within nine months, and approximately 11,000 working hours per year were saved in recruiting.

At the same time, the interview demonstrates that AI creates the greatest value when applied to clearly defined use cases, particularly by supporting data-driven decision-making processes in human resource management. The implementation was carried out as part of an internationally oriented transformation initiative that combines global standardization with local adaptability.

The interview was published in the journal Business & Information Systems Engineering (BISE).
