Rowling's story of "the boy who lived" has influenced a whole generation of readers and, simultaneously, become a major media phenomenon and something like a merchandising gold-mine. In this seminar we will analyse and discuss the Harry Potter saga from various theoretical viewpoints, among them questions of gender, class, religion and identity. We shall of course also evaluate Rowling's novels as cultural artefacts and their significance in the literary world.
