The emergence of feminism and, more broadly, gender studies has also helped spawn the rise of questions concerning masculinity - specifically its construction in society. The first half of this course aims at understanding the central questions of masculinity studies and the theory upon which it is grounded. Attention will also be paid to several studies that address the changing definitions and presentations of masculinity in pertinent American contexts, especially those that discuss the policing of masculinity. Finally, we shall endeavor to investigate contemporary American media ourselves in order to formulate our own discussions of how they contribute to the social construction of what makes a man a man.
