"You Men are Writers, and can represent us Women as Unbecoming as you please in your Works, while we are unable to return the Injury." These are words spoken by Arietta in The Spectator, a widely-read, male-authored periodical of eighteenth-century England. The unspoken truth, though, was the fact that more and more female authors were inking their pens and making their presence felt in the literary market. Female authors desired to leave their mark everywhere: newspapers, periodicals, novels, poetry, and drama. This course will introduce and investigate the female practice of writing in the age of conduct-books and coffee-houses. Writers like Eliza Haywood, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, Charlotte Lennox and anonymous female voices amongst others will guide us down the lanes of eighteenth century and help us explore the challenges women faced in the public sphere.
