To the bibliography and its formation

The bibliography of the pedagogical movement “Herbartianism” is a research-result that belongs to DFG-project “Biodoxographical Corpus Pedagogical Herbartianism”. The intention is to offer an extensive representation of herbartian publications as far as possible. While doing it, the bibliography has not the requirement to be complete because not every single publication can be clearly assigned to the pedagogical Herbartianism. From there, the bibliography must see as a working-bibliography that can never be complete but is extended permanently as far as possible.

To guarantee the entering of the regarded as secure and important publications of Herbartianism, there are the following three criterions, that form the basis of the choice of entries:

1) The bibliography should comprise the publications of persons who were defined from the herbartian circle itself. For this, the following bibliographies of Herbartianism which were created by the Herbartians themselves were put together and arranged alphabetically (concerned to the authors):

The so created alphabetical bibliography gives an overview to the question which persons belong to the herbartian movement in the broadest sense. There were the following 40 authors which form the “writing-core” of the pedagogical movement, deduced by their number of publication and their degree of fame:

Jetter, Karl Just, Hermann Kern, Karl Kehrbach,Theodor Klähr, Friedrich Krönlein, Gustav Adolf Lindner , Bruno Maennel, Karl Eduard Mager, Friedrich Mann, Eduard Morres, Wilhelm Rein, Hermann Rolle, Adolf Rude, Ernst von Sallwürk, Karl Volkmar Stoy, Ludwig Strümpell, Ernst Thrändorf, Johannes Trüper, Theodor Vogt,Theodor Waitz, Georg Weiss, Theodor Wiget, Otto Willmann & Tuiskon Ziller.

2) The bibliography should take into consideration the biographies of the chosen 40 Herbartians which were prominent and very active in publication.

For this, the following already available bibliographies were used:

3) The bibliography should contain all publications of the 40 chosen Herbartians in the most important journals of pedagogical Herbartianism as far as possible.

Accordingly to this, the extension of the bibliography was continued by investigation for publications of the named Herbartians in the following journals:

The alphabetical bibliography contains 7000 entries at present. The works of every author are chronological arranged, the publications are mentioned by monographs and essays.

34 of 40 named Herbartians (apart from Freund, Grabs, Kern, Klähr, Rolle and Rude --> next) have got a link to get information about their life and work (more or less in detail because the level of research) as PDF-document. More detailed analysis and discussions to the single herbartian theories are reserved for special-research.

The writing follows the original spelling. If this is not comprehensible at present, the writing follows the rules of the new spelling. The names of the authors are completely mentioned as far as possible. If there are more than one spelling in the sources, the names have been standardised.
