Workshop with Prof. Florian Coulmas: "On the right track: Tokyo and the railway lines"
Wed, Feb. 11, 2015
The IN-EAST School of Advanced Studies invites you to a workshop with Prof. Florian Coulmas:
On the right track: Tokyo and the railway lines
Modern life is urban life. Many people of many walks of life congregate, interact, and cooperate. The division of labour is most highly developed in the city, and the bigger the city, the more so, because where many people gather providers of highly specialized products and services can still find a clientele. The big city is dense, but density does not mean that people can stay put in one place. Unless they move about, life comes to a standstill, to the detriment of everyone. Mass transport is one of the principal challenges for big cities everywhere. This paper is about how Tokyo has confronted this challenge and the general significance of railway lines in Japan’s biggest city.
Date: Wednesday, February 11, 2015, 10:30–12:30 h
Venue: SG 183 (Geibelstraße 41)
Participants are invited to a light lunch after the seminar to continue discussion.
