In der Mercatorprojektions-Karte ist Grönland so groß wie Afrika – 14-fach zu groß. Dafür kann man, weil die Karte winkeltreu ist, die Schiffsroute z.B. von Trinidad nach Spitzbergen als gerade Linie einzeichnen, wenn man – was am einfachsten ist – einen konstanten Kurswinkel zur Nordrichtung fahren möchte: 32° östlich von Nord.

In der Equal-Earth-Karte sind die Flächenverhältnisse korrekt: Grönland ist nur so groß wie die Arabische Halbinsel. Dafür sind die Formen der Länder verzerrt: Afrika ist in Ost-West-Richtung gestaucht, der Norden von Grönland ist in Ost-West-Richtung auseinandergezogen und in Nord-Süd-Richtung gestaucht. Und eine gerade Linie auf der Karte ist nicht die Route mit konstantem Winkel zur Nordrichtung.

Die Mercatorprojektions-Karte wird zur Veranschaulichung der Kontinente und Länder der Welt aber schon lange nicht mehr verwendet. Die Tagesschau hat sie bereits 1993 durch eine flächentreue Karte ersetzt: zunächst durch die „Peters-Karte“ (die aber die Formen der Länder stark verzerrte), später kamen andere Kartendarstellungen, die einen Kompromiss zwischen wenig Flächenverzerrung und wenig Formenverzerrung darstellten.

Die USA hatten als einzige gegen die UN-Resolution gestimmt. Vielleicht wollten sie sich die Illusion bewahren, dass Grönland so groß und begehrenswert ist.
