38th Chemnitz Finite Element Symposium 2025 - On Tour in Mülheim an der Ruhr
This traditional conference of Chemnitz University of Technology was organized in collaboration with Professor Arnd Rösch's Nonlinear Optimization Working Group and took place from September 15 to 17, 2025, at the Katholische Akademie Die Wolfsburg in Mülheim an der Ruhr.
Frontiers of Science Award for Johannes Sprang
Prof. Dr. Johannes Sprang (University of Duisburg-Essen) has been awarded the prestigious Frontiers of Science Award in Algebraic Number Theory together with Prof. Dr. Guido Kings (University of Regensburg). The $25,000 prize has been presented on July 13, 2025, in Beijing.
How mathematics decodes the hidden
Inverse problems and their applications are being researched by Dr. Yi-Hsuan Lin from the National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (Taiwan). He is a guest of Prof. Dr. Irwin Yousept in the Department of Mathematics for 18 months. Lin's stay is funded by a research fellowship for experienced researchers in the Humboldt Foundation’s Henriette Herz Scouting Program.
Obituary on Prof. Dr. Jürgen Herzog
The Faculty of Mathematics sadly acknowledges the loss of Prof. Dr. Jürgen Herzog, who passed away on April 23, 2024 at the age of 82. With Jürgen Herzog we lose one of our longest-standing members and a globally recognized personality who shaped the field of commutative algebra for over fifty years.
Prof. Dr. Antoine Laurain Professor for Infinite-Dimensional Optimization

Prof. Dr. Antoine Laurain is developing mathematical pathways with the help of which mobile units can be designed more environmentally friendly as well.
He holds a professorship for Infinite-Dimensional Optimization at the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

Dr. Johannes Sprang joins faculty
As of May 1, 2021, Dr. Johannes Sprang has started as a junior professor in the Department of Mathematics at Essen. His research focuses on arithmetic geometry and number theory. Before coming to Essen he worked at the University of Regensburg. We are very happy to welcome him in our faculty.

Obituary on Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Heinrich Wefelscheid
With great dismay the Faculty of Mathematics learned of the death of its esteemed colleague Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Heinrich Wefelscheid. Shortly after his 79th birthday he passed away unexpectedly for many of us.
Research Training Group 2553 “Symmetries and classifying spaces: analytic, arithmetic and derived”
The German Research Foundation DFG will fund a Research Training Group run by the Essen Seminar for Algebraic Geometry and Arithmetic starting April 2020. The first funding period will run for four and a half years. After an initial phase, eventually 13 positions for PhD students and one postdoc position will be funded.
