Rasteraugerelektronenmikroskopie
Was kann ein Rasteraugermikroskop?
Ein Rasteraugermikroskop (SAM) verbindet die Techniken der Rasterelektronen-Mikroskopie (SEM) und Augerelektronen-Spektroskopie (AES). Mit diesem Gerät ist es möglich sowohl SEM Aufnahmen als auch 2D Karten der chemischen Zusammensetzung einer Oberfläche mit einer lateralen Auflösung von ca. 7nm aufzunehmen.
Ein Elektronenstrahl rastert über die Oberfläche einer Probe und erzeugt dabei einerseits langsame Sekundärelektronen und andererseits Augerelektronen. Die Detektion der Sekundärelektronen liefert Informationen über die Topographie der Oberfläche. Augerelektronen hingegen habe eine kinetische Energie die elementspezifisch ist und somit erlaubt die spektroskopische Untersuchung der emittierten Elektronen einen Rückschluß auf die chemische Zusammensetzung der Oberfläche.
Der Prozeß der zur Erzeugung von Augerelektronen führt ist in Abbildung 1 skizziert. a) Ein Elektron des primären Elektronenstrahls schlägt ein Elektron eines Oberflächenatoms aus seiner Atomschale heraus . b) Das enstandende Loch wird durch den Übergang eines Elektrons aus einer energetisch höhergelegenen Schale gefüllt. c) Die Energie die dieses zweite Elektron dabei freigibt wird strahlungsfrei in die kinetische Energie eines dritten Elektrons aus derselben Schale umgewandelt. Dessen kinetische Energie ist also nur abhängig von der Energiedifferenz zwischen den atomaren Schalen und unabhängig von der Primärenergie des Elektronenstrahls. d) Dieses dritte Elektron wird aus dem Atom herausgelöst und spektroskopisch detektiert. Seine Energie liefert einen Rückschluß auf das Element aus dem das Elektron stammt.
Das ICAN nutzt das Scanning Auger Nanoprobe 710 der Firma Ulvac-Phi.
