Other award winners at the UDE in 2010

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Heinz Fissan
is a Fellow of the American Association for Aerosol Research.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Heinz Fissan of the University of Duisburg-Essen has been appointed an AAAR Fellow. The American Association for Aerosol Research (AAAR) awards this title to particularly committed members. Prof. Fissan has been awarded this title in recognition of his outstanding scientific articles, of which there are more than 400 in total. In addition, the expert in aerosol measurement technology is promoting cooperation between US and European scientists.

Prof. em. Dr. Eberhard Wassermann
receives the Badge of Honour of the DPG.

The German Physical Society (DPG) will today (12.11) award Prof. Dr. Eberhard Wassermann the Badge of Honour for his personal outstanding contribution to the DPG. Eberhard Wassermann is an emeritus professor of experimental physics at the University of Duisburg-Essen. As a specialist in magnetic materials he was the spokesperson of the DFG “Magnetism” Collaborative Research Centre at the university, and until 2009 was the chairman, now honorary chairman, of the nationwide DPG “Magnetism” Working Group.

Prof. Dr. Elke Sumfleth
receives the Medal of Honour of the GDCP.

At this year’s annual meeting in Potsdam, Prof. Dr. Elke Sumfleth was awarded the Medal of Honour of the GDCP. Among the reasons given for the honour were her “outstanding achievements in the teaching of chemistry, which have contributed significantly to profiling, research and development”. The medal was awarded in 2010 only for the third time, and for the first time went to chemistry teaching and not to physics teaching.

Dr. Sabine Fechner
is awarded the Junior Award of the Society for the Teaching of Chemistry and Physics (GDCP).

This year’s GDCP Junior Award goes to Prof. Sumfleth’s former graduate student Dr. Sabine Fechner for her dissertation on the “Effects of Context-oriented Learning on Student Interest and Achievement in Chemistry Education”.

Dr. Philipp Dammann
receives the Traugott Riechert Prize.

What exactly does the inside of our brain look like? What lies where? And how can surgeons better visualize the brain structures of their patients? For seeking the answers to these questions, neurosurgeon Dr. Philipp Dammann of the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) has been awarded the Traugott Riechert Prize of the German Society of Neurosurgery worth 5,000 euros.

Prof. Hoyer
receives the “Golden Kidney”.

Prof. Peter F. Hoyer, Director of Paediatrics II at the University Hospital Essen, has been awarded the “Golden Kidney” at an international congress in New York. The European Society for Paediatric Nephrology presented him with this award for his outstanding achievements in the field of paediatric nephrology and their development in Europe.

The “Golden Kidney” is the highest honour conferred by the European scientific community.

Prof. Dr. med. Hans-Christoph Diener
is awarded the Max Nonne Medal.

Prof. Dr. med. Hans-Christoph Diener, director of the Department of Neurology at the University Hospital, has been awarded the Max Nonne Medal of the German Society of Neurology (DGN) for his outstanding achievements in the field of neurology. The medal is considered one of the highest honours in this field.

Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Herbert Rübben
receives the Maximilian Nitze Medal.

Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Herbert Rübben, director of the Department of Urology at the University Hospital Essen, has been awarded the Maximilian Nitze Medal for his scientific achievements. This is the highest honour conferred by the German Society of Urology (DGU) to outstanding individuals in their fields.

The prize winners combine medical knowledge and human activity. With the award, the jury is paying tribute to his scientific achievements in the field of urology, which have always been down to his own personal commitment.

Prof. Dr. Gabor Wiese
receives the 2010 G.-D.-Baedeker Prize.

This is the first time that an associate professor has been awarded the prize for services performed during this period. The prize is endowed with 5,000 euros, and was awarded for the 26th time this year.

In particular, Prof. Wiese has examined the relationship between geometry and number theory referred to as “Serre’s modularity conjecture”, suspected to exist since the 1970s but only recently proven He succeeded in solving the outstanding “Multiplicity” problem for Galois representations of modular forms.

has been admitted as a Fellow to the European Academy of Sciences and as a corresponding member to the Bavarian Academy of Sciences.

The renowned chemist has been admitted as a Fellow to the European Academy of Sciences and as a corresponding Member to the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. Until his retirement in 2002, Schmid held the Chair of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE).

Prof. Dr. Rolf Gimbel
receives the 2010 Willy Hager Medal.

Prof. Dr. Rolf Gimbel, director of the Department of Process Engineering/Water Technology at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) has been awarded the 2010 Willy Hager Medal for his outstanding achievements, especially in the further development of filter and membrane technologies that enable substantial particle removal in the treatment of drinking water.

Prof. Dr. med. Dirk Schadendorf
is awarded the German Cancer Award for dermatologists.

Prof. Dr. med Dirk Schadendorf of the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) has been awarded the 2010 German Cancer Award in the “Clinical Part” area for his investigations into melanoma. He has headed the Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Allergology at the University Hospital Essen since 2008.

The German Cancer Society awards the prestigious prize in the categories of clinical, experimental and translational part for outstanding scientific achievements, and current and pioneering work in oncology. The focus of Prof. Dirk Schadendorf's scientific and clinical activities is the cancer which affects darker skin, melanoma.

Dr. Giriraj Jnawali
receives the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation award.

From the Himalayas to the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) and the skyscrapers of Manhattan: Dr. Giriraj Jnawali from Nepal has successfully attained his doctorate in the Ruhrgebiet and will now go to New York as a Feodor Lynen Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Afterwards, he will continue his research at the UDE. The 35-year-old completed his Bachelor of Science degree at Tribhuvan University Kathmandu in Nepal. For his Master’s degree he headed to the University of Hanover, where he graduated in 2004 with a thesis on the nanosciences. Last year, the physicist graduated with Summa cum laude at the UDE, where he has worked since 2005, under the professorship of Prof. Dr. Michael Horn-von-Hoegen. The research group focuses on the physics of nanostructures on silicon surfaces.

Prof. Dr. em. Bedrich Hosticka
is appointed an IEEE Fellow.

Due to his outstanding achievements in analogue circuits and sensor systems, Professor Dr. Bedrich Hosticka, recently retired professor of microelectronic systems and microsystems technology at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE), has been appointed an IEEE Fellow by the worldwide Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. With more than 375,000 members in over 160 countries, the IEEE is based in New York and is the world’s largest technical professional association. The IEEE organizes conferences, publishes various journals and forms committees for the standardization of technologies, hardware and software.

Prof. Dr. Claus M. Schneider
receives the Gay-Lussac-Humboldt Prize.

Cross-border exchange of knowledge: Prof. Dr. Claus M. Schneider has been awarded a special Franco-German science prize. In early April he will receive the Gay-Lussac-Humboldt Prize in Paris. The physicist teaches at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE), and the basics of magnetism is among his topics. He is also a director at the Institute for Solid State Research at the Forschungszentrum Jülich. The prize is given in recognition of his scientific work and services to Franco-German scientific cooperation. The 25,000-euro prize is awarded annually by the Ministry of Education and Research and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to four or five German and French scientists from all research disciplines.
