were awarded the “Bosom Friend” Patients’ Prize.

Naturopathy or high-performance medicine? In this ideological battle, the focus is often not on the patients but on who is right. Prof. Gustav J. Dobos and PD Dr. Sherko Kümmel, however, are seeking to ensure that new therapies are of direct benefit to those affected. The experts at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) have now been honoured for their commitment with the “Bosom Friend” Patients’ Prize. This bronze statue is awarded by the mamazone initiative – Women and Research against Breast Cancer.

Polish university confers honorary professorship to Prof. Wolfgang Kleemann.

On October 2, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Kleemann from the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) will become an honorary professor of the University of Silesia. This prestigious title is given to him in recognition of the applied physicist’s outstanding contributions to the development of the university. In particular, they are based on the remarkably intense research contact with his colleague Prof. Dr. Jan Dec and his working group.

Fresenius Prize for Prof. Torsten C. Schmidt.

Prof. Schmidt carries out research at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE), and is now being awarded the Fresenius Prize of the German Chemical Society (GDCh) for his many activities aimed at promoting this important field. The award ceremony will take place on 3 September in Darmstadt.

Prof. Michael Kaeding
is the holder of a Jean Monnet Chair.

For almost a year, Prof. Michael Kaeding (36) has been teaching and researching at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) in the field of European integration and policy. Now he is also the holder of a Jean Monnet Chair, for which almost 600 other colleagues applied.

This EU accolade is only awarded to distinguished professors who have been published in international publications, have teaching experience, and who have an expert knowledge of European integration. The amount of funding for three years is 45,000 euros and will benefit university projects that help spread knowledge about the European Union. Specifically, Kaeding and his team are seeking to shed light on the decision-making processes within the EU and the acceptance of EU policies in the member states.

PD Dr.-Ing. Daniel Balzani and PD Dr. Dominik Heider
receive the G.-D.-Baedeker Prize winner, 2013.

This year, the jury awarded the Gottschalk Diederich Baedeker Prize to two outstanding scientists from the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE): 2,500 euros went to civil engineer Priv.-Doz. Dr.-Ing. Daniel Balzani and to biologist Priv.-Doz. Dr. Dominik Heider. The patron of the award, Mayor of Essen Reinhard Pass, together with Rector Prof. Dr. Ulrich Radtke presented them with their certificates.

Prof. Diener
receives a European award.

Prof. Dr. Hans-Christoph Diener, director of the Department of Neurology at the University Hospital Essen has been awarded the Johann Jacob Wepfer Award at the European Stroke Congress in London. This is the highest award from the European Stroke Association. It was awarded for his scientific work in the field of acute therapy and the prevention of strokes.

German Diversity Award 2013 for ProSALAMANDER.

The post-qualification programme ProSALAMANDER has been awarded the German Diversity Award 2013 as the most innovative diversity project in Germany. The joint project for the strengthening of foreign academics through post-qualification is only offered at the universities of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) and Regensburg (UR). Stiftung Mercator is supporting ProSALAMANDER with 2.5 million euros.

Prof. Dr. Johannes H. Schulte
receives the Kind Philipp Prize.

Prof. Dr. Johannes H. Schulte of the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) will receive the highest German award in the field of basic research of leukaemia and childhood cancer, the Kind Philipp Prize. The Association for Paediatric Oncology and Haematology (GPOH) is thereby recognizing the special achievement of his international group of researchers at the Centre for Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine at the University Hospital Essen.

Prof. Dr. Dr. Andreas Bockisch
receives the Georg von Hevesy Medal.

Prof. Dr. Dr. Andreas Bockisch of the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) has been awarded the highest scientific award of the German Society of Nuclear Medicine, the Georg von Hevesy Medal, for his outstanding service. Since 1996, 62-year-old Prof. Bockisch has been the director of the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the University Hospital Essen and has made a major contribution to his subject.

Prof. Dr. Michael Ehrmann
receives two prestigious international awards.

Prof. Dr. Michael Ehrmann has recently been awarded no less than two high honours: The chairman of the Centre for Medical Biotechnology (ZMB) at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) has been appointed a member of the American Academy of Microbiology. The main reason for the accolade was his outstanding scientific contributions in the field of microbiology.

The second award has been awarded to him by Cardiff University in the UK, which on account of his outstanding achievements has appointed Prof. Ehrmann a Professorial Research Fellow.

Prof. Michael Forsting
accepted into Leopoldina.

Honourable inclusion: Prof. Michael Forsting, director of the Institute of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology and Neuroradiology at the University Hospital Essen and president of the German Radiological Society, is a new member of the prestigious German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

receives the German Life Science Award.

Prof. Dr. Shirley Knauer (36) from the Centre for Medical Biotechnology (ZMB) has been awarded the German Life Science Award. She shares the prize, worth 50,000 euros, with a scientist from Dresden.
