Prof. Dr. Thomas Retzmann
will be awarded the Max Weber Prize in 2012.

The Department of Economics and Teaching of Economics is delighted that Prof. Dr. Thomas Retzmann is this year’s recipient of the Max Weber Prize for Business Ethics. Prof. Dr. Thomas Retzmann and Prof. Dr. Tilman Grammes (University of Hamburg) accepted the award during a ceremony held at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences.

Prof. Peter Horn
receives the Jean Julliard Prize.

Prof. Peter Horn, Director of the Institute of Transfusion Medicine at the University Hospital Essen (UKE), is the second German researcher to receive the internationally-recognized Jean Julliard Prize. The award has been given by the Society for Blood Transfusion for his research on the in-vitro production of patient-specific cellular blood products.

Dr. Stefan Kasper
receives the Innovation Award of the German Society for Haematology and Oncology (DGHO).

Colon cancer is the second most common cancer in Germany, with around 70,000 new cases each year. For around half the patients, the disease will already be at an advanced stage. Dr. med Stefan Kasper has been awarded the Research and Innovation Prize of the German Society of Haematology and Oncology (DGHO) for his pioneering discoveries in the field of resistance mechanisms in the targeted treatment of cancer.

Prof. Dr. Reinhard Zellner
receives the GDCh Literature Prize.

The Literature Prize awarded by the German Chemical Society (GDCh), and worth 10,000 euros, this year went to Prof. Reinhard Zellner for his book “Chemistry above the clouds ... and below” [Chemie über den Wolken... und darunter]. According to the judges, he had written a knowledgeable and at the same time exciting and attractive book about the relationship between the atmosphere, environment and climate.

Prof. Dr. Jürgen Wasem
receives the Fritz Lickint Medal.

For his research into the direct and indirect costs of smoking, Prof. Jürgen Wasem has now been awarded the Fritz Lickint Medal. Given by German Society for Nicotine and Tobacco Research (DGNTF), he received the award at the German Addiction Congress in Berlin.

Jan Kruse
receives the Rave Research Prize.

In future, European citizens should be able to speak their native language plus two foreign languages – this at least is the declared educational goal of the EU. In his doctoral thesis, Dr. Jan Kruse focused on this “Barcelona Principle” and has been awarded the prestigious Rave Research Prize on Foreign Cultural Policy awarded by the Institute for Foreign Relations in Stuttgart.

Dr. Carolin Schmitz-Antoniak
receives the Dale Sayers Young Scientist Award.

Dr. Carolin Schmitz-Antoniak has been awarded the Dale Sayers Young Scientist Award – an award that is only given every three years. The International X-ray Absorption Society (IXAS) awards the prize for outstanding contributions to synchrotron radiation research. Schmitz-Antoniak, working in the research group of UDE Prof. Heiko Wende, focuses on nanoscale systems, their structure and magnetism.

Professor Fuhr
receives the Gerard Salton Award.

Prof. Dr. Norbert Fuhr from the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) knows the ins and outs of the World Wide Web. The information system expert has now been awarded the Gerard Salton Award by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the world’s largest IT association. The prize is awarded every three years to researchers who have made a particular contribution to the computer-based search for complex content (information retrieval). It is the most important honour in this field.

Prof. Heusch
gives the William Harvey Lecture 2012.

How can you protect the heart from a heart attack? Prof. Gerd Heusch is carrying out fundamental research on this question. In recognition of his work, the director of the Institute of Pathophysiology at the Essen University Hospital (UKE) has now been granted the highest accolade of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC): Heusch will give this year’s William Harvey Lecture at the ESC’s annual meeting.

Steffen Wiese
receives the 2012 Eberhard Gerstel Prize.

Steffen Wiese from the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) has been awarded the 2012 Eberhard Gerstel Prize for an outstanding scientific publication. The bi-annual prize, which is endowed with 1,500 euros, was presented at the analytica conference.

Prof. Dr. Andreas Ney
receives the 2012 G. D. Baedeker Prize.

In the presence of Lord Mayor Reinhard Pass and Rector Prof. Dr. Ulrich Radtke, physics professor Dr. Andreas Ney (39) from the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) was awarded the 2012 G. D. Baedeker Prize.

is a new member of the NRW Academy.

The well-known cardiac specialist Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Gerd Heusch from the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) is one of the 16 researchers who have now been accepted as full members of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
