Timo Benitz (University of Ravensburg), who can show a 1,500 m best time of 3:40 minutes, took bronze in 27: 24.3 minutes.Dietz finished eleventh as the sixth-best German runner.

2nd place men up to 90 kg (Robert Westerkamp)
3rd place women up to 48 kg (Julia Rotthoff)
At the European Championships of the universities in Coimbra (Portugal), the starters from the University of Duisburg-Essen received one bronze and one silver.
Julia Rotthoff won a bronze medal in the weight class up to 48 kg on the first day of the competition. In the first fight she was defeated by the eventual winner from France, and she won her second fight prematurely. After losing in the semi-finals, she fought for bronze.
Robert Westerkamp started on the third day of the competition in the weight class up to 90 kg. In his opening fight he beat a Frenchman over time. In the pool final, he quickly won with Ippon against a local hero. In the semifinals, Robert and Yuko won against a French fighter and thus secured the ticket for the final. In the final battle, the Essen fighter had to admit defeat to another French. In the end, he was happy with his well-deserved silver medal.
DHM Rowing - June 28th-30th, 2013, Brandenburg
1st place men foursome - racing community together with students from the universities of Bochum, Hamburg and Würzburg - (Stefan Wallat)
2nd place men foursome (Marc Benger, Sebastian Joraslafski, Max Reidick, Markus Wallat)
2nd place men eighth - together with students from the Universities of Bochum and Cologne (Andreas Baloghy, Marc Benger, Max Reidick, Markus Wallat)
From June 28th until 30th, 2013 the German University Rowing Championships took place in Brandenburg an der Havel. This event is enjoying growing popularity in the rowing scene, which means that last year's record number of entries was again increased by 20%. However, this also meant a more complex elimination system with several preliminary and semi-finals. The seven-man crew at the University of Duisburg-Essen was not prepared for that. This meant that various boat classes had to be reassigned afterwards in order to distribute the number of races equally to all athletes.
The men's double scull was the first big hope on Saturday. The two engineering students, Andreas Baloghy and Marc Benger, showed their strengths as a tournament team. So they could only qualify for the final with a 2nd place in the hope run. Here it was time to improve again, and the duo achieved this with flying colors. Right from the start, they moved up to second place, just behind the leaders from Dresden. They were then able to save this one to the finish and ensured the UDE crew's first success.
On Sunday the races started in the men's four-man without a helmsman. Here the University of Duisburg-Essen was represented in the very large registration field with 17 boats in two boats. On the one hand, a pure UDE foursome started with Marc Benger, Sebastian Joraslafski, Max Reidick and Markus Wallat. Furthermore, Stefan Wallat was at the start with a four-man team. Stefan and his team used the DHM as a test for the Universiade in Kazan, which they will take part in a week later. In Kazan they will start in the lightweight class, i.e. none of the athletes may weigh more than 72.5 kg. In Brandenburg they started in the open class and had to assert themselves against half of the four-without started in London. This succeeded surprisingly well, so the team from Hamburg, Würzburg, Bochum and Duisburg was able to confidently win the title in the men's four-man without helmsman.
The pure UDE foursome was able to achieve a surprisingly good result with an 8th place out of 17 boats that started. On Sunday evening, the men's eighth took place as the last race of the day. Since the team from the UDE did not arrive with sufficient strength, they teamed up with students from the University of Bochum and Cologne.
In the final it was up against the eighth of the RWTH Aachen, who had dominated in recent years. It was a duel at eye level, until shortly before the finish it was still the bow of the Ruhr area team that was in front. At the finish it was half a second behind the Aacheners and the 2nd place. We could still be proud of this performance because it was our eighth who was the only one who was able to put the long unbeaten Aachen team under serious pressure. In addition to the three podium places, Alex, Sebastian, Max and Markus also crossed the finish line in 12th place in a double scull. Alex Roos drove the lightweight men's single on Sunday and placed 10th.
All participants had great fun taking part in the DHM. They agreed to start again next year, possibly with a bigger team.
DHM table tennis 2013 (June 14th-16th) in Freiburg
2nd place men's doubles: Hermann Mühlbach (with Jens Berkenkamp, TU Dortmund)
3rd place men's singles: Hermann Mühlbach
3rd place mixed doubles: Oxana Gorbenko and Hermann Mühlbach
From June 14th-16th, 2013 the DHM in table tennis took place in Freiburg, the warmest city in Germany. The University of Duisburg-Essen sent Franziska Fleischmann, the twins Alla and Oxana Gorbenko, and Hermann Mühlbach into the race.
Three medals for students from Essen
The new university champion in the men's singles, Alexander Flemming from Leipzig, stated that the DHM was "as well staffed as it has not been for a long time" - so the results of the athletes at the Uni DuE are all the more gratifying. Oxana reached 3rd place in mixed doubles with Hermann: "We are particularly happy about the mixed medal, after we had just been eliminated in the quarter-finals in the two years before." Hermann also made the jump for the first time in the singles in Freiburg on the podium. He lost in the semifinals only in the decisive set against the eventual winner. In the men's doubles there was a new edition of the finals from 2010. At that time, the Essen combination Hermann Mühlbach and Jens Berkenkamp (now TU Dortmund) had the upper hand against Alexander Flemming and Lennart Wehking (SpoHo Cologne). This year, however, they had to bow to their opponents after a 2-0 lead in the decisive set.
But also the quarter-finals in the women's doubles by Franziska and the 5th place in the women's team of the twins are positive.
Universiade in Kazan
Thanks to the good results at the DHM, Hermann was also able to qualify for the students' world sports games, which will take place from 6th to 17th July will be held in Kazan (Russia). After the Olympic Games, the Universiade is the second largest multisport event with 12,000 participants from 170 nations. Eurosport broadcasts 120 hours live from the competition venues.
“I would like to thank the University of Duisburg-Essen, without whose great support I would not have been able to take part in the Universiade,” Hermann admits. Under the proven leadership of Jürgen Schmagold, high-performance sports-oriented students will find optimal conditions in Duisburg-Essen University Sports to fully exploit their potential. In addition to Hermann, the long jumper Steffanie Voss and the hockey player Felix Meyer take part in the Universiade.
Table tennis courses are offered at the University of Duisburg on Tuesdays and Fridays and in Essen on Mondays and Wednesdays. At the DHM, every student can take part in the individual competitions. For the team competition, a qualification tournament will be held in advance, for which you can register until July 31, 2013. More information can be found on the university sports and adh websites.
DHM Taekwondo 2013 (June, 16th) in Heidelberg
2nd place Simikic Lazar (over 80 kg)
With the aim of increasing the placement from 2012 (bronze), Lazar Simikic (34 years old, master's student in business administration - health economics and health care management) began preparing for the renowned tournament in Heidelberg in March. In addition to numerous successful tournament starts at tournaments in Duisburg, Cologne, Hanover and Frankfurt with good placements, he had a balanced training in the preparation phase - in his home clubs MTV Langenberg 1882 eV and Turnverein 1877 eV Essen-Kupferdreh (TVK) - with a workload of an average of fifteen hours per week on the program. The Taekwondo units were accompanied by regular runs around the Baldeneysee or Langenberger transmitter, as well as occasional "counting tiles" in the local bathing establishments.
Due to the good preparation, the Taekwondoka was the only UDE starter who confidently went to Heidelberg for the German Taekwondo Championships on June 16, 2013. Here he was registered in the men's open weight class "80 kg +" in a high-class starting field in performance class A. In addition to the sporting incentive to improve, the tournament also focused on qualifying for the Taekwondo Student EM 2013 in Russia.
In the quarterfinals, Simikic got off to a very good start against Matthias Becker (WG Munich) in the first round, which he was able to secure 2-1. But the Munich man was able to compensate for the lead with a skilful head hit and brought the Essen to the edge of the knockout, but Simikic managed to turn the tide with a sensational increase in performance in the last 20 seconds and won the fight 7: 6.
In the semifinals, Maximilian Linke (HS RheinMain) was a good technician as an opponent for the Essener in the ring. After a balanced initial phase, Simikic managed to take the lead 1-0. During this action, his opponent was hit and shortly afterwards had to pass after an unfortunate evasive action due to a joint injury. Thus the way to the final was paved and the set goals were achieved for the time being.
Nevertheless, the budding health economist was of the best will, but the first signs of fatigue became apparent after the second fight. In addition, Simon Hahn (TU Clausthal) was an experienced opponent, known nationally for his speed and accuracy. Due to a rash action, Simikic quickly fell behind with three points after a counterattack by Clausthaler, which left its mark on the final. Hahn knew how to maintain and expand his lead through skillful blocking and counterattacking, so that Simikic had to admit defeat after the third round, twelve points behind. The winner was also able to tell the Essen resident his recipe for getting the EM ticket at the ceremony and advised him to intensify his training.
Lazar Simikic's performance is consistently positive and motivates him to stay on the ball in Taekwondo in the future. Because the silver medal is also a reason to be proud of the work that has been achieved.
EUC Badminton 2013 (May 05th-11th) in Uppsala, Sweden
1st place in the women's singles for Anika Dörr
1st place in women's doubles for Anika Dörr and Laura Wich
2nd place in the men's singles for Alexander Roovers
After many organizational tasks arose one day after arriving in Uppsala, the team tournament finally started on Monday. After the draw, the universities from Uludag (Turkey), Bern (Switzerland) and Rouen (France) were waiting for the Uni DUE team.
Unfortunately, they lost 3-2 in the first team game against the Turks. As a result, they were already under a lot of pressure in the second group game, but were able to win 3-2 against Bern. The decisive game should take place on Tuesday against Rouen. The table constellation stipulated that the Uni DUE team had to win 4-1 against Rouen to win the group. After four games it was 3: 1, as hoped, and only the decisive mixed should follow. Unfortunately, both athletes lost in the third set with 21:19 and instead of making it to the semifinals, the team of the University of DUE was only looking for 9th place. After the first disappointment, they then clearly won against Beira Interior (Portugal) with 3: 0 and finally against Granada (Spain) 3-1.
On Thursday, Wednesday was extensively devoted to exploring the city of Uppsala, we were then in the individual competitions to overcome frustration.
The women's doubles with Anika Dörr and Laura Wich later played their way into the final with ease. And Anika Dörr also made it into the final in the women's singles, as did Alexander Roovers after a tough fight in the men's singles. Unfortunately, the remaining players were eliminated in the first and second round. These were Timon Ufermann and Marián Ufermann in the men's singles, Laura Wich in the ladies singles and the pairing Roovers / M. Ufermann in men's doubles.
On the final day, Anika Dörr convinced in the women's singles against Mona Reich from the University of Mainz. With 21:14 and 21:10 she managed a clear victory.
In the women's doubles, the Essen ladies also went off the court as winners. So they only defeated Dobrynina / Vorobeva from Russia in the third set with 28:26. Alexander Roovers missed his first gold medal in the men's singles after a great deal of wear and tear in the semifinals. He was defeated by Saarbrücken student Sven Eric Kastens with 12: 21, 21: 17 and 14:21.
DHM Sports and Archery 2013 (May 16th-19th) in Hannover
3rd place in individual ranking BHvS 2013 OSP: Stefan Decker
DHM Feldhockey 2013 (June 7th/8th) in Düsseldorf
2nd place for the team
The university event of the year began on a sunny Friday at 12 noon: the German university championship in field hockey. Of course also there: The University of Duisburg-Essen.
Immediately in the first game it was against the supposedly strongest opponent of the group: Aachen 1. After the first few minutes, when the team first had to warm up, it was already 2: 1.
So it went on, the game was brought home 5-3.
The second game against Aachen 2 - a mandatory victory was needed - the team clearly won 10: 1.
Immediately afterwards the next game against Münster, it was won 5-2. The Münster team should have played against Darmstadt immediately afterwards, but they needed a break.
So the University of Duisburg-Essen stepped in again, thinking of being able to spend an evening off. Darmstadt played very defensively, more than a 2-1 could not be achieved. The matchday ended with a group win!
On Saturday it went to the semi-finals against Dortmund. In a hard-fought game, the University of Duisburg-Essen was able to prevail 2-1 in the end and thus stood in the final against Aachen 1.
Aachen started very aggressively, which visibly caused problems for the Ruhrpottler and ultimately led to it being 0: 2 at halftime. Despite intensified offensive efforts, the players of the University of Duisburg-Essen did not manage to score a goal in the second round, so nothing changed about the 0: 2 until the end of the game. Thus, the Uni DUE is the German runner-up of the universities in 2013!
DHM Judo 2013 (April 27th/28th) in Tübingen
1st place men -90 kg (Robert Westerkamp)
2nd place women -48 kg (Julia Rotthoff)
2nd place women -63 kg (Julia Malcherek)
2nd place team women (Hannah Karrasch, Julia Rotthoff, Julia Malcherek, Sina Limberg, Nina Grabowski, Carina Kersten, Christiane Rippers, Katrin Marie Warstat)
On April 27th/28th this year 12 starters from the University of Duisburg-Essen in Tübingen competed in the German Judo University Championships.
The competition started very successfully on Saturday with the individual championships. In the men's category, after some spectacular victories and an exciting final, Robert Westerkamp was able to look forward to the well-deserved gold medal and the title of German university champion, thus defending his title in the under 90kg class. Dennis Gutsche also started in the weight class, but unfortunately could not compete after his victories at the beginning, in the semi-finals, as well as in the "small final" for 3rd place due to injury and had to be satisfied with 5th place. Stefan Urselmann and Lars Bathen also started in the weight class, but were eliminated from the competition after a defeat. Likewise Volker Schuchardt in the weight class up to 81kg.
In the women's category, Julia Rotthoff (-48kg) and Julia Malcherek (-63kg) won silver. Both fought their way through to the finals with strong fights. There both internationally successful opponents faced who decided the fight for themselves. There was also a 5th place for Hannah Karrasch in the weight class up to 52 kg. Sina Limberg was able to win a fight, but lost in a duel and was therefore eliminated from the competition. Tina Rippers, Nina Grabowski (both -70kg) and Katrin Warstat lost the first fight and were eliminated immediately.
On Saturday were the team competitions, in which the university was able to provide both a men's and a women's team. However, the men could only occupy 3 of 5 weight classes, so a single defeat meant the team's defeat. In the first fight, Lars (-90kg) and Volker (-81kg) could not prevail, so Stefan's victory was unfortunately not enough for the team victory. Even in the men's duel, where Stefan scored one point after a strong fight and Volker scored another, it was unfortunately not enough for the team to win.
It is different with women. Julia Rotthoff, Hannah Karrasch, Julia Malcherek, Sina Limberg, Tina Rippers, Nina Grabowski, Katrin Warstat and Carina Kersten made the team tactically clever and showed strong performances until they won after 4 fights, all of which the team won with 4: 1, in the final - against the team from the University of Hamburg. Unfortunately, the 2 individual victories were not enough here. Nevertheless, the team can look forward to the silver medal it deserves.
DHM athletics hall 2013 (January 30th) in Frankfurt-Kalbach

On January 30th, 2013 the German university championships in athletics (hall) took place - like last year again in Frankfurt-Kalbach.
