German University Championship (DHM)
The German University Championships (DHM) are the German championships for students at universities in Germany. The special thing about the DHM is that amateur and amateur athletes start together with senior athletes and top athletes. This allows student athletes who are very good in their discipline, but far from the national top, to compete with the squad athletes for a performance comparison and maybe motivated to further training activities in their sport. And since there are also team competitions, there is even the possibility of beating a reigning German champion, whose team does not work so well, in a strong team. The university championships are about more than just comparing performance at a high level, because they combine aspects of competitive sport with student interests in encounters, communication and exchange. The adh annually organizes around 40 German university championships in 32 sports, including newer - or trend sports, are included in the program or organized as "ADH-open" as required. The University of Duisburg-Essen has produced numerous German student champions in recent years, and we were particularly well represented in the sports of badminton and judo (women). These championships often recruit participants who then also take part in international student championships through to the “Olympic Games for Students”, the Universiade.
Students at our university who are interested in participating in the DHM's must register via the university sports office. More information about the DHM is available here, on the website of the General German University Sports Association.

UDE team wins the final at the German University Championship (DHM) in rowing
As a highlight, the team of CRC rowers from the University of Duisburg-Essen was able to win the men's quadruple scull race at the German University Championship (DHM). Jakob Gebel, Moritz te Neues, Jan Renner and Matthias Keulen have thus qualified for the European Student Championship. In a heartbeat final, the team from the University of Duisburg Essen defeated the boat from the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, which was leading until shortly before the end, with a brilliant final spurt with a lead of 3 tenths of a second. The batsman of the four-man Jan Renner was visibly exhausted after the race, but extremely satisfied. “We started the final sprint early in order to move forward, but realized that that wasn't enough. Moritz then just announced two more spurts. From then on we grew beyond ourselves. Absolutely fantastic, ”said Renner after the race.
FISU Attribution Plaque travels through NRW
On May 15, 2021, the International University Sports Association (FISU) awarded the 2025 FISU World University Games in the Rhine and Ruhr region. During the meeting of the Executive Committee, the adh chairman of the board, Jörg Förster, was presented with the FISU Attribution Plaque in Düsseldorf, which, as a symbol for the starting shot, is now - similar to the Olympic flame - "visiting" the various venues for the mega-event and universities in the region.

2nd place DHM Athletics on February 12th, 2020
2nd place 60 m hurdles for Yannik Wodarczak
3rd place DHM Riding (December 12th-15th, 2019) Vechta
3rd place in the team for Alexa Heidböhmer, Gretha Swantje Völke and Elisa Abeck
After months of preparation and the surprising qualification victory in Würzburg at the beginning of October, riders Alexa Heidböhmer, Gretha Völke, Elisa Abeck and team leader Tabea Aren made their way to Vechta for the 2019 German University Championships last Friday the student riders from all over Germany and a subsequent celebration under the main motto "Wedding". On Friday morning, they went into the saddles. They showed a successful team dressage and Gretha and Alexa were rewarded with a ticket to the next round, where they then had to admit defeat with small differences to their competitors. In the evening they could celebrate the successful first day.
Jumping was on the program on Saturday. With the great horses organized by the Oldenburg student riding group, Gretha and Alexa also went into the first L-round. It was a really exciting day with heart pounding.
The gala ball was one of the many highlights of the DHM on the program. Full of tension, they waited for midnight when it was finally announced which three teams were allowed to compete against each other in the final on Sunday. When "Duisburg-Essen" fell, there was no limit to their joy.
After a short but great euphoria, it was time again: Concentrate, talk through the dressage and give everything!
The results speak for themselves:
Gretha: Dressage 13, jumping 11, combination (from Spr / Dr) 8
Alexa: Dressage 10, jumping 12, combination (from Spr / Dr) 5
It was a great, exciting and emotional DHM with really fantastic horse material and a big thank you goes to the Oldenburg student riding group for the organization!
Bronze and silver DHM canoe polo (November 23th/24th, 2019) Kiel
2nd place in the team for Marvin Pelz, Timothy Dorn, Rieke Mester, Kristin Schmidt, Rainer Sterk and Alexander Harzheim
3rd place in the team for Ludwig Thomas, Chiara Schneid, Nils Kauer, Jan Mester and Barbara Urbano
This year we were able to return successfully from the university championship. We went to Kiel with 2 teams to defend our title from last year. The group stage was finished with aplomb. Team 1 won 8-1 against WG Potsdam, 7-1 against WG Bochum, 6-2 against WG Aachen and finally 10-0 against Heidelberg University.
Our 2nd team was able to present equally good results. They won 6-0 against WG Kassel, 7-4 against WG Kiel and 6-3 against Freiburg University. Only against the later opponent in the game for 3rd place, the FU Berlin, you had to accept a 3-0 defeat.
It was clear that both teams would be able to participate in the quarter-finals and the evening was spent comfortably together until the next morning.
Both teams were able to show their qualities in the quarter-finals. While Team 1 defeated WG Hannover 7-3 without major problems, the quarter-finals of the 2nd team against the University of Göttingen looked a little different. Ludwig Thomas was able to achieve the final score of 4: 3 with a long throw in the final second. So both teams were in the semi-finals, but not against each other. So the 1st Guard had to compete against the FU Berlin, which started with a World Games winner, world and European champion, as well as 2 women national players. Through concentrated and disciplined play, our team managed a 2: 2 that lasted until the last minute. Here, too, the game could only be decided shortly before the end. Marvin Pelz scored the 3-2 winner 20 seconds before the end, so the first team from the University of Duisburg-Essen was in the final. The next match was the game of the 2nd team against the Sport University Cologne. Here, too, you had to face 3 women’s national players, as well as some experienced men’s players. Unfortunately, the University of Duisburg-Essen lost to the Sport University Cologne in the golden goal, i.e. 5: 4 in overtime in a very tight game.
Team 2 now had to prove itself again in the game against the FU Berlin, the former group opponent. Motivated by the narrow semi-final defeat, the bronze medal wanted to be taken home. With a 5: 3 a more than deserved victory could be achieved by quickly switching and concentrating. A podium position was secured, now it was Team 1's turn. The game against the Sport University Cologne was close from the first minute and goals were scored again and again on both sides. Until 2 minutes before the end, the score was 7: 5 for the Sport University Cologne. By playing risky, it was possible to shorten it again to 7: 6, but owing to the less physical condition, the Sport University Cologne prevailed with 9: 7. Thus bronze and silver were brought home and hopefully there will be enough to win the title again next year.
1st place DHM Taekwondo (November 3rd, 2019) Gelnhausen
1st place full contact - B up to 57 kg for Stella Schmidt
After Stella Schmidt was able to fight for first place in the German Taekwondo University Championship in 2018, she also competed for the University of Duisburg-Essen this year.
On November 3rd, 2019 she started in Gelnhausen in the weight class women -57 kg performance class B.
In the final, she met her opponent from the University of Kiel, against whom she had already fought last year.
After three rounds she won the final fight with 22:15 and thus successfully defended her title.
Three German university championships in rowing for the UDE
This year, the University of Duisburg-Essen was able to contribute to the increasing attractiveness of rowing at universities with a higher number of participants. With a total of six participants in six different boat classes, the team started on the last weekend in June.
The Allermöhe regatta course in Hamburg is initially presented from its most beautiful side. Bright sunshine and smooth water provided excellent conditions for the ever-growing reporting field.
On Saturday the women's double scull with Mareike Adams and Leonie Neuhaus qualified directly for the final in the afternoon thanks to a successful run-up. The defending champions were able to live up to their role as favorites and rowed a sovereign start-to-finish victory. So they bought the ticket for the European Games in Belgrade (Serbia) 2020.
Janina Hanßen, who won last year for the university, also started on Saturday in a four-man without in cooperation with the University of Leipzig. Despite a boat damage during training, Janina was able to achieve third place with her team. Due to the persistent heat, the first day of the competition was very demanding for the participants and they had to recover as much as possible until Sunday.
On Sunday the regatta started early in the morning. First, the boats had to qualify for the finals in the afternoon in the respective heats. Janina Hanßen was the first to start in the single. Thanks to a tactically intelligent race division, she was able to win the first silver medal for the University of Duisburg-Essen. Immediately afterwards, the freshly made up mixed scull with Mareike Adams, Paul and Moritz te Neus and Leonie Neuhaus followed. Due to the increasing wind, demanding conditions awaited the four rowers. The boat was able to break away from the field shortly after the start and, despite the difficult conditions, clinched the next victory in a controlled manner.
Also on board this year was the French Erasmus student Amandine Fleury who, together with Janina Hanßen and the University of Leipzig, came in eight. The nine women drove a fierce race, were able to break away from the field on the second half of the track and take the next victory. Both went to the start without a pair, which was unfortunately canceled due to the steadily worsening wind conditions.
The University of Duisburg-Essen looks back on a very successful weekend with three wins and one silver medal. Next year the athletes hope for loud support at the university championships at Elfrather See in Krefeld. Not only advanced skiers can take part, but also beginners who have learned to row in university sports. An ever-growing team should be the goal for the next few years.
Gold in rowing (September 4th-07th, 2019) and silver in badminton (June 23th-29th, 2019) at the European Championships for the University of Duisburg-Essen
Mareike Adams (sitting in the photo) and Leonie Neuhaus were happy to receive their gold medals at the European University Championships (EUSA Games).
With a lead of more than three seconds, the students from our university confidently secured victory in the women's double scull.
In addition, there was the silver medal in badminton for the UDE at these European championships: Katharina Altenbeck and Laura Wich were able to secure second place in the women's doubles.
And again it shows: We have strong women at the university (see also the Duisburg company run).

UDE prevails in volleyballGerman university champion (June 22th-23th, 2019)
Winner on the net: The men's volleyball team of the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) is German university champion and thus brings the coveted title to the Ruhr area. At the same time, the team uses it to buy the ticket for the EUSA Games 2020, the European championships for students.
For the defending champion Bochum it was already over in the preliminary round, while the UDE was among the best four in the tournament in Hamburg. In the first game against the University of Karlsruhe, which played with the second division team, the UDE team, peppered with Bundesliga experienced players, managed to find its rhythm in serve and block. In particular, the middle blockers Oskar Klinger and David Seybering, who can look back on appearances in junior national teams, presented insurmountable obstacles, while Jan Holthausen scored over the diagonal. Clearly all three sentences went to the UDE.
The next day you faced the opponents from Munich. The team was present and self-confident from the start, started with a series of hard jump serves and took a 6-1 lead. Sets one and two went to Duisburg-Essen with 25:13 and 25:17. In this encounter, too, there was only a short phase of weakness in sentence 3. However, the team countered immediately and had turned the final set by 18:14.
"We offered a second division qualification, especially as a team," sums up coach Thomas Stark. He found words of praise for Libero Tim Boer and Lukas Schattenberg, who ensured stability in the build-up of the game. “Thomas Woitzak skilfully pulled the strings in the pass and our central attackers Klinger and Seybering as well as Jan Holthausen scored at will. Andreas Tins, Thomas Eickelberg and Otto Feltges immediately introduced themselves to the game when making tactical changes. "
Further sporting hopes are now on the UDE soccer team, which has also made it to the championship finals. In the semifinals she will face the University of Rostock, after which the teams from Würzburg or Bayreuth are waiting.
1st and 2nd place DHM Badminton (June 8th-10th, 2019) Karlsruhe
1st place mixed for Markus Hennes
2nd place in the team for Markus Hennes, Friederike Henze, Daniel Druyen, David Kischel and Laura Wich
The soccer team from the University of Duisburg-Essen becomes German runner-up among the students (June 21th/22th, 2019)
After winning the German championship in volleyball, which the UDE men's team achieved, the footballers from the University of Duisburg Essen have now also achieved great success. In the final round of the “Final Four” in Würzburg, the eleven clearly won 3-0 in the semifinals against the team from Rostock. The team was thus drawn into the final of the German University Championship, which was played the following day. The opponent here was the home team of the University of Würzburg.
Unfortunately, the team had to do without 4 important players in the final game. Until the 44th minute, the 0-0 was held against the strong Würzburg. Then, however, it became clear that the four key top performers could not be replaced equally. There were no more substitutes and when another player injured himself so that he could not continue playing, there was nothing left to oppose the strong Würzburgers with 10 players remaining. In the end, the game was clearly lost 6-0, which would certainly have been different for the team in the semi-finals. The UDE team deserves a great deal of respect, as reaching the final and winning the German vice championship of universities was an outstanding success under difficult conditions.
The following players were called up in Würzburg:
Max Chmielewski, Nicolas Krause, Daniel Neustädter, Soufian Rami, Lukas Grötecke, Damian Bartsch, Thomas Kirsch, Ribene Nguanguata, Pascal Meyer, Soufian Cem, Alexandros Armen, Lars Gronemann, Georgios Ketsakis, Danny Walkenbach, Yassine Bouchama.
3rd place DHM table tennis (May 24th-26th, 2019) Aachen
3rd place mixed for Balazs Hutter and Felix Kleeberg
3rd place DHM Karate (April 27th, 2019) Heidelberg
3rd place Kata single from 3rd Kyu for Umay Demirkan
It was a very close fight for the final, which Umay Demirkan unfortunately lost with 0.1 points.
1st place DHM Snowboard & Freeski (March 16th-23th, 2019), Les Deux Alpes / France
1st place SLS Board Men for Kai Landtau
3rd and 4th place DHM Snowboard & Freeski (March 16th-23th, 2019), Les Deux Alpes / France
3rd and 4th place for David Michiels
The DHM was a great event again this year. Fantastic weather, great snow conditions and a perfectly prepared park did not disappoint. As in previous years, the field of participants in the slopestyle was manageable, but a new ladies line was in the women's competition.
In the cross competitions the participation was traditionally higher. In contrast to slopestyle, the route here is no comparison with a professional route. Every driver who comes down a black slope can also take part here.
A bad qualification time in ski cross unfortunately left Kai Landtau the last choice of the starting gate in the final and thus he could no longer get close to the group. Unfortunately, he couldn't build on his third place from last year and had to be content with fourth place.
In ski slopestyle, Kai has improved his personal performance (he never drives over kickers) and was able to repeat the miracle of les Deux Alpes. A 5th and thus again the penultimate place in the competition could be achieved.
In addition to the sporting competition, there was of course also plenty of fun during the week. In addition to the hot dog booth in the park and various après-ski options, the organized parties in the clubs or on the mountain huts were outstanding!
