Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Duisburg-Essen
Support provided for a successful start into your undergraduate studies
As to the fact indicator "Support during the entrance phase in academics" our faculty has placed at the top flight in the latest ranking of the Center for Academic Development".
Summer school on Exponential Motives
From September 21 to 25, 2026, a summer school on exponential motives was held in Essen. Javier Fresán, Peter Jossen, Claude Sabbah and Swann Tubach have taught mini-courses, supplemented by a couple of research talks.
Workshop: Stochastic Navier-Stokes equations
From June 15 to 18, 2026, a workshop on stochastic Navier-Stokes equations took place in Essen. The aim of the workshop was to bring together international experts working on both analytical and numerical aspects of stochastic fluid dynamics and to foster new collaborations.
Research Training Group 2553 will be continued
The German Research Foundation DFG has decided that our Research Training Group 2553 “Symmetries and classifying spaces: analytic, arithmetic and derived” will be funded for a second period of four and a half years, until March 2029. The next 5 doctoral positions have been filled as early as October 2024.
Irwin Yousept scout for Henriette Herz programme
In the Henriette Herz programme of the Humboldt Foundation, Professor Dr. Irwin Yousept has been appointed as the first scout at the University of Duisburg-Essen.
Mathematically predicting complex processes
How do liquids make their way through the rock and soil beneath us? Where do these liquids end up after several years? And how does the earth deform because of these flows? This is not only of interest to physics and engineering. The newly appointed Dr Wietse M. Boon aims to find out how such problems can be solved using computer algorithms. He is the new Assistant Professor of Applied Mathematics at our faculty.
Research into better maths teaching
By 2033, the federal states will provide around 26 million euros to continue QuaMath, a programme aimed at improving maths teaching in up to 10,000 schools across Germany. Our faculty is involved in five areas – ranging from individual support in primary school to differential calculus in upper secondary school.
Combining numbers and language perfectly
Language is important for understanding mathematics. This is demonstrated by Prof. Dr. Lena Wessel, the new professor of mathematics education at our faculty. As part of her practice-oriented projects, she collaborates with schools, among other partners, and develops professional development programmes for mathematics teachers.
Optimizing decisions mathematically
What are neural networks, and how do they work? Prof. Dr. Sorin-Mihai Grad, the new Professor of Discrete and Stochastic Optimization at our faculty, aims to improve the understanding of mathematical mechanisms underlying these algorithms, making them more efficient and precise.
