The University of Duisburg-Essen’s 14th Diversity Day will take place on 18 May at the Duisburg campus.

The Vice-Rectorate for University Culture, Diversity and International Affairs encourages students and staff to come together, celebrate diversity at our University and, at the same time, welcome the international guests of the Aurora Annual Conference.

Program 2026

Between 2 and 5 pm, the space between the buildings LF, LK, LA and LX on the Duisburg campus will be given over to a festival where all members of the University can find information and exchange thoughts about inclusion, equal opportunities and diversity. While enjoying hot and cold drinks and a selection of tidbits, you can meet and interact with key players who advocate the protection and visibility of diversity at UDE. Both English and German will be spoken.

2.00 – 5.00 pm: Festival ground in the Duisburg campus

If the weather is nice, a small festival ground will be set up between the trees in front of the LK library. Here, curious members of staff and students can get together and get creative, with opportunities to make buttons, win vouchers and other activities on offer at various tents. The area below, in front of the LF building, will be equipped with our new ‘city decks’ and a lounge corner provided by the General Student Committee (AStA) for informal conversations.

Diversity as academically explored and underpinned at our University will also feature on this day. The Institute for Gender-Sensitive Medicine, the Committee for Diversity Management’s working group on right-wing extremism and others will present their work in the foyer of the library and in the University’s communication room (Kommunikationsraum).

No registration necessary.

from 5.00 pm: Dr. Mai Thi Nguyen-Kim "Cutting through the noise: How to catch people's attention and build trust in the information age" (AURORA)

This year’s Diversity Day will be held in association with the Aurora Annual Conference, which will take place between 18 and 21 May in Duisburg. Aurora is a network of nine European universities that jointly examine the impact of sustainability and innovation on society and, in addition to various other endeavours, offer students opportunities for international exchange.

We are excited to announce the opening ceremony of the conference, which will begin immediately after the Diversity Day. As part of the opening ceremony, Dr. Mai Thi Nguyen-Kim will give a keynote speech titled ‘Cutting through the noise: How to catch people’s attention and build trust in the information age’. It is open to all UDE students and staff.

Code of Conduct

The German Diversity Day (Deutscher Diversity Tag; DDT) is a nationwide event day intended to make diversity visible in the workplace. It has been held every year since 2012 at the initiative of the Charta der Vielfalt association and is celebrated in businesses and institutions. The day provides a platform for turning the spotlight on engagement for diversity and a work culture of appreciation free from prejudice.

As in any social sphere, harassment, discrimination and abuse of power also occur in higher education institutions. Diversity Day events will bring together participants from various professional and personal backgrounds with differing experiences and views. This will provide for a programme with many facets and diverse perspectives. The following Code of Conduct is intended to help create a space with as little discrimination as possible for everyone involved where thoughtful consideration of participants’ individuality prevails.

By participating in the Diversity Day, you agree to observing the following Code of Conduct:

  1. We expect all participants to be considerate and respectful in what they say and do during the event.

  2. We ask that participants make an effort to keep discussions constructive, especially when the contents are controversial.

  3. Discriminatory behaviour based on gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, economic or employment status, disability, illness, neurodiversity, physical appearance, background, nationality, ethnicity, skin colour, age, religion or other categories of identity will not be tolerated.

  4. Any form of verbal, non-verbal, physical or visual harassment will not be tolerated. This includes but is not limited to: intimidation; persecution or stalking; harassment; taking photos or videos of individuals; constant interruptions of talks, workshops or other events; unsolicited physical contact and any form of sexual violence.

  5. The photo policy must be adhered to: no photos or other recordings (audio, video, etc.) may be taken during the event.

  6. If a participant is asked to stop harassing people, they are expected to do so immediately.

  7. We expect participants to be mindful of their surroundings and other participants.
  8. If participants notice harassment, discrimination, abuse of power or other behaviour that is contrary to this Code of Conduct towards others or are affected themselves, they can turn to the awareness team or the organising team, who will handle the matter confidentially.

If participants notice harassment, discrimination, abuse of power or other behaviour that is contrary to this Code of Conduct towards others or are affected themselves, they can turn to the awareness team or the organising team, who will handle the matter confidentially.

Consequences of unacceptable behaviour

The organising team reserves the right to take appropriate measures in cases of unacceptable behaviour. This may also involve exclusion from an event.
