Language courses

Study in German Language requirements

The language of instruction at the University of Duisburg-Essen is German with the exception of the international degree courses. So you must have a good command of German if you wish to complete your studies successfully, except for some courses. The majority of foreign applicants must pass the "Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang" (DSH 2) before beginning their studies.

In case of admission to a doctoral programme a proof of German language proficiency is not necessary if the doctoral degree regulations accept alternative languages.

Share culture Tandem language learning

The idea is to work with a native speaker of your chosen foreign language to improve your language skills. You not only learn the language, but also get a first-hand account of everyday life, work and leisure in another culture. Tandem language learning can turn into a lifelong friendship that builds valuable bridges between different cultures.

In degree courses which have English as an admission requirement, TOEFL, IELTS or an equivalent must be supplied. Further details are available at the International Office or at the Student Councelling and Academic Career Services (ABZ).

French, English or Chinese Language courses

The Institute for optional studies (IOS) offers language courses in more than ten languages: Trends like Spanish or Japanese or classics like Ancient Greek and Latin.
