PICTURE A SCIENTIST

Online screening and panel discussion at UDE

19th–21st June 2021

Why is it that in our minds it is often still "the male scientist" when we think about who actually does science? In the recently launched documentary PICTURE A SCIENTIST, three women scientists a biologist, a chemist and a geologist take on these questions and lead the audience on a journey through the experiences of their academic careers as women of science. The Equal Opportunity Office, the Faculty of Medicine, the Center of Medical Biotechnology and the Graduate Center Plus invite all interested researchers at the University of Duisburg-Essen to an online film screening and subsequent panel discussion.

The film

In PICTURE A SCIENTIST, biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks and geologist Jane Willenbring give direct accounts of their own experiences in research, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle insults. Along their stories, from cramped labs to spectacular field stations, other renowned scientists provide new perspectives on how we can make science itself more diverse, equitable and open to all.

The film is in English with German subtitles.
