The ERC Synergy project “Archean Park” seeks a new postdoc in microbial ecology at the Environmental Metagenomics group led by Prof. Dr. Probst at the Research Center One Health Ruhr of the University Alliance Ruhr and as part of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Duisburg-Essen. The highly interdisciplinary project will explore microbial metabolism during the Archean Eon by examining the deep biosphere in high-CO2 ecosystems hundreds of meters below ground. You will apply cutting edge short- and long-read metagenomics, analyze complex datasets by integrating different omics and explore the metabolism of bacteria and archaea in silico, for which you will have access to our high-performance computing cluster. You will also be involved in cultivating microbes and participating in research expeditions to drilling sites in a research truck. On board the research truck, you will apply analyses of total organic carbon, 16S rRNA gene amplicons with Oxford Nanopore Technologies, and microscopy of freshly taken samples. The Archean Park project will be in close collaboration with the Hinrichs lab at MARUM Bremen, the Berg lab at WWU Münster, and the Kallmeyer lab at GFZ Potsdam. You will interact and work closely with all of these groups in the field and at joint meetings.
Regarding soft skills and career development, we envision that you will become a member of the Water Graduate School at University of Duisburg-Essen, which will ensure a specific education for your needs and provide multiple opportunities to interact with peers and other scientists in seminars and workshops.
Our young and dynamic team of microbiologists, virologists, and computational biologists seeks to increase the diversity in our group, and we specifically encourage international candidates to apply for this position.
