The ZIM with its 117 employees is the central service facility for IT, media and learning technologies. It operates the data centre, server and storage infrastructures as well as the entire network and is responsible for the university's lecture hall IT.

The division eScience operates the central high-performance clusters magnitUDE and amplitUDE at the UDE and supports users in setting up, porting and further developing their scientific applications and simulation methods. Individual consultations as well as comprehensive training courses and workshops are offered for this purpose. At the same time, the team is involved in the North Rhine-Westphalian Competence Network for High Performance Computing (hpc.nrw) and is therefore in close dialogue and cooperation with all HPC locations in NRW.

Your main tasks

  • You introduce scientific users to the high performance clusters.
  • You provide individual advice and support for users with their applications and software.
  • You conduct training courses in the field of high performance computing and scientific computing.
  • You collaborate closely with researchers to understand their computational needs and provide tailored solutions across disciplines.
  • You create and revise the support services, e.g. documentation.
  • You provide technical support for the HPC systems (hardware and software).
  • You participate in national and international conferences and meetings.
  • You advise on the conceptual design and procurement of new scientific computers and clusters.

Your profile

  • A university degree in natural sciences, engineering or computer science (at least 8 semesters) is required
  • In-depth knowledge in at least one of the following fields of expertise, each with reference to high-performance computing is required
    • Artificial intelligence / machine learning
    • Programming for graphics card units (GPUs)
    • Runtime analysis and performance optimisation of parallel programming or applications
  • Knowledge of at least one programming language commonly used in HPC (C/C++, Fortran) is required
  • Knowledge of parallel programming with MPI, OpenMP, CUDA or OpenCL is required
  • Experience in supporting and advising users in the field of high-performance computing is desirable
  • Experience in the operation or use of high-performance computers is desirable
  • Understanding of state of the art architecture and configuration of HPC system including clusters, parallel file-systems and accelerators (GPUs, TPUs) is desirable
  • Experience in the development of parallel software codes is desirable
  • Experience in the conduction of training sessions and workshops for users of HPC is desirable
  • Independent working methods and initiative as well as a high level of communication, organisational and social skills, problem-solving ability and a pragmatic working style
  • Willing to undergo continuous further training
  • Willing to work on both campus and travel to data centers
  • Very good written and spoken German and English skills (English B2, German B2)
