Your main tasks

The DFG-funded project “DeepH: Horizontal evolution of uncultivated archaea in the deep biosphere” seeks a new PhD student in microbial ecology at the Environmental Metagenomics group led by Prof. Dr. Probst at the Research Center One Health Ruhr of the University Alliance Ruhr and as part of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Duisburg-Essen. The interdisciplinary project will explore microbial genome organization of archaea form deep subsurface ecosystems across the globe. You will use genome-resolved metagenomics of long-read technology and genome-centric bioinformatics. You will also be involved in single-molecule microscopy and research expeditions to sampling sites in Europe (Germany, Italy), US, and Japan. The DeepH project will be in close collaboration with the lab of Ulrike Endesfelder (University of Bonn).

Your profile

  • M. Sc. or equivalent with focus on microbiology, microbial ecology, geomicrobiology, genomics, bioinformatics or similar.
  • Proficient knowledge in DNA extraction and (q)PCR is required.
  • Bioinformatics skills are an advantage, particularly are knowledge in genome-resolved metagenomics, Oxford Nanopore Technologies, and programming in shell, python, and/or R.
  • Experience in field work is not expected but will be a plus; so is knowledge fluorescence microscopy.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English.
  • Furthermore, we expect a high degree of self-initiative, inventiveness and creativity, as well as good interpersonal skills and flexibility.
