Your main tasks
- Independent research on the DFG-funded project “Efficient image-based simulation techniques for 3D phase-field modelling of fracture processes in micro-heterogeneous materials II: Development of an adaptive multigrid approach on octree grids”
Project summary: Numerical modelling of three-dimensional brittle fracture processes in micro-heterogeneous media is addressed in this project. Here, highly efficient methods are required. Our objective is to develop a high-performance algorithm for adaptive phase field modelling of fracture, which exploits the strengths of the scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM). We plan to develop a multigrid approach on octree grids where a preconditioned conjugate gradient solver is used as a smoother. At the same time, we aim to exploit pattern-based operations to the full extent. This will contribute to minimizing communication in a massively parallel framework. The final simulation framework will facilitate virtual testing of 3D micro-heterogeneous samples and thus contribute to gaining a better understanding of damage and fracture processes in composite materials.
- Publication of project results in high-ranking international journals with peer review and presentation at conferences; preparation of final project report
Your profile
- PhD degree in engineering or natural sciences, applied mathematics or related fields (e.g. civil engineering, mechanical engineering, computational mechanics, physics). The thesis should at least be submitted with the defense pending.
