Your main tasks
The successful candidate will conduct research and teach at the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Institute of East Asian Studies in the field of comparative sociology with a focus on contemporary Japanese society. Applicants must have a proven track record of excellent, internationally visible research achievements in comparative sociology.
We expect the successful candidate to have published papers in leading peer-reviewed venues and have experience in conducting projects for which they have acquired external funding from competitive schemes themself, preferably projects funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) or equivalent, as appropriate to the advertised position. The appointee will be expected to contribute to research collaborations such as the DFG Research Training Group ‘East Asian Futures’ and will also have the opportunity to become actively involved in the Alliance for Research on East Asia Ruhr (Area Ruhr). In addition, an excellent command of written and spoken Japanese is expected.
Furthermore, the successful candidate will be involved in teaching for the BA and MA programmes in East Asian Studies, Sociology and the subject Economics and Politics as part of the teacher training programme and in further developing these programmes. The University of Duisburg-Essen attaches particular importance to the quality of teaching. Candidates must outline their didactic approach, also taking the profile of the University of Duisburg-Essen into consideration. Relevant teaching experience and the ability to teach in German and English are expected. Non-German-speaking applicants are expected to acquire appropriate German language skills within three years of appointment. The University provides support with regard to German language training. Successful implementation of innovative teaching methods and experience in developing study programmes are also desired.

Criteria for appointment are based on Section 36 of the NRW Higher Education Act (Hochschulgesetz NRW; HG).
This appointment is for an initial term of five years as a fixed-term civil servant (W2 university professorship). After a successful evaluation as part of the tenure track process, continued employment on a permanent basis (W3 university professorship) is envisaged.
