Scientific Researcher (f/m/d, No. 487-26)
TV-L 13 (brutto 39.747 € - 56.493 €)
Research activities in the Disch group are centered on the structure, magnetism, and dynamics in functional nanoscale materials. Our long-term goal is an understanding of structure and magnetism from the atomic scale through nanoscale morphology to macroscopic applications. We address this using and developing novel X-ray and neutron scattering methods, combined with macroscopic magnetization measurements.
You will be embedded in the international, DFG-funded research collaboration MemGrain, which investigates the effect of nanoscale grain boundaries on the proton conduction in barium zirconate membranes. The project combines materials synthesis with structural analysis and diffusion studies by X-ray and neutron scattering.
Start of employment

Duration of employment
3 years
Working time
26 hours 41 Min. (67%)
Your main tasks
- Synthesize perovskite proton-conducting materials and characterize their structural and physical properties
- Conduct scattering experiments at large-scale (synchrotron/neutron) research facilities
- Analyze the local and long-range crystallographic structure using total scattering / pair distribution function (PDF) analysis
- Investigate proton diffusion using neutron scattering techniques
- Document research results and manage research data
- Present and publish results at national and international conferences and in peer-reviewed journals; contribute to interdisciplinary collaboration
Your profile
- Above-average university degree (1st state examination, diploma or master's degree) in chemistry or a related field of at least 8 semesters of standard study time.
- Strong interest in structure-property relationships in nanoscale materials.
- Experience with synthesis and characterization of inorganic nanoscale materials.
- Excellent command of written and spoken English.
- High degree of self-initiative, analytical thinking, creativity, and ability to work collaboratively.
- Advantageous: background in crystallography and experience with X-ray or neutron scattering.
- Advantageous: experience with handling large datasets and/or programming.
The successful candidate is expected to pursue a cumulative (publication-based) PhD within the framework of the project.
We offer you
- An interesting PhD topic under excellent supervision
- An active interdisciplinary research environment between chemistry, physics and materials science
- Access to and training on state-of-the-art equipment and large-scale research facilities
