Prof. Schall-Giesecke's group is formed by researchers from the Department of Electronic Components and Circuits (EBS) and the Photonic Integrated Circuits (PIC) group at the Fraunhofer Institute for Microelectronic Circuits and Systems (IMS). The team is working together on the development of innovative photonic integrated circuits. The components for the photonic circuit platform are simulated and characterised at EBS. This work forms the foundation for the integration of the technology at Fraunhofer IMS.
Contribute to pioneering advancements in integrated photonic technologies and collaborate with leading experts to deliver solutions with far-reaching technological and societal relevance for (bio-medical) sensors and novel energy efficient computing architectures.

Your main tasks
Research and Development of Integrated Photonic Components and Circuits
- Design, simulation, and layout of passive and active integrated optical components, with a focus on developing electro-optic modulators by integrating novel materials into the post-CMOS Photonics (silicon-based dielectric photonics using silicon nitride and aluminum) technology platform.
- Work closely with process engineers at Fraunhofer IMS to ensure compatibility with available technology modules and fabrication processes.
- Conduct device characterization and optimization in our state-of-the-art laboratories, ensuring high-performance and reliable photonic components for applications in biosensing, quantum sensing, and artificial intelligence.
Teaching and Academic Contribution
- Support the preparation and delivery of academic courses on semiconductor technologies and others, contributing to the department’s educational mission.
- Assist in the supervision of student projects and theses, providing guidance and expertise to the next generation of researchers.
Your profile
- Master or equivalent qualification in engineering (preferred electrical engineering) or physics with a focus on microelectronics, on telecommunication engineering, photonics, applied physics, quantum optics or comparable topics
- Initial experience in one of the following subject areas is desirable: integrated photonics (silicon photonics, nanophotonics) or optoelectronics or simulation of opto-electronic devices using relevant software tools (Python and/or Lumerical) or opto-electronic measurement techniques or communication/sensor technologies
- High motivation to solve scientific challenges creatively and independently
- Written and spoken German language skills are preferred
- Further academic qualification is expected and supported as part of the position.
