The ATMo² (Incentive-Based Transformation and Modeling of Mobility Behavior) project, run by the two Ruhr universities of Duisburg-Essen and Dortmund, is researching and developing low-investment options for incentive-based changes in mobility behavior. It examines the effectiveness of various measures, i.e., which types of incentives (“nudges”) work for which population groups and in what way. The project is funded by the Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation, and Transport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The current sustainability goals, not only in North Rhine-Westphalia, can only be achieved if the transport sector also makes a substantial contribution to reducing climate-damaging greenhouse gases. In this area, considerable efforts must be made in the coming years to achieve not only a shift in propulsion systems, but also a genuine shift in transport and mobility.

Through an interdisciplinary research approach, the ATMo² project will contribute to the development of instruments for gentle behavioral control that are not only effective (in terms of climate protection) and economically viable, but also accepted by those affected.

The project builds on findings obtained between 2020 and 2023 in the InnaMoRuhr project, which focused on the UA Ruhr universities.

The Social Research Center's (Prof. Dr. Johannes Weyer) research area of sociology of technology is coordinating the project. Other project participants include:

In the ATMo² project, Fabian Langanki and Prof. Heike Proff are developing innovative approaches and business models that could result from changes in mobility behavior through nudging.
