The working group for Organic and Supramolecular Chemistry, headed by Prof. Niemeyer, is part of the department of Organic Chemistry in the Faculty of Chemistry. The faculty hosts 27 professorships and more than 240 scientific researchers, making it one of the largest chemistry faculties in Germany.

Your main tasks

  • You will work on the research project “Stimuli-responsive rotaxanes as a novel molecular switching platform for ratiometric electrochemiluminescent sensors”.
  • This project is a joint research project between the groups of Prof. Jochen Niemeyer (University of Duisburg-Essen) and Prof. Joohoon Kim (Kyung Hee University, Seoul, South Korea).
  • You will work closely with one PhD student from Seoul on the joint research project.
  • You will have the chance to carry out a part of your research work in the partner lab in Seoul (ca. 4-6 months).
  • Within the project, you will synthesize, characterize and apply novel rotaxanes that feature electrochemoluminescent groups.
  • You will apply the ECL-rotaxanes for the detection of various analytes (e. g. fluoride, H2O2, NADH, enzymes) in environmental and biological samples.
  • You will have the possibility to improve your skills in modern organic synthesis and electroanalytical chemistry. This will include the use of modern analytical methods, such as 1D- and 2D-NMR, MS, XRD, HPLC, electrochemistry and UV/Vis / fluorescence experiments.
  • Further tasks include the writing of manuscripts for publications and the presentation of the results at national and international conferences.

Your profile

  • You are passionate about Organic Chemistry, Supramolecular Chemistry and novel Analytical Methods? Then we are looking forward to your application! 
  • You need a degree (Master/Diplom, min. 4 years) in chemistry or a related field.
  • You should have a strong background in Organic Synthesis, including the purification and analysis of Organic Molecules.
  • Additional experience in the areas of Supramolecular Chemistry and Electrochemistry are helpful.
  • You should be fluent in English (oral and written)
